I did Part 1 running the simulation step by step. I leveraged one key insight for Part 2: any new obstacle must be placed somewhere on the original path from Part 1. This reduces the search space from 19K to 5K (approx) tiles, and I brute forced it from there.

And the trick for detecting a loop was being on a previously traversed tile and facing the same direction.

Runtime was around 25 minutes single-threaded on an Apple M1 Pro.

The sampling methodology described here illustrates one of the most frustrating things about everybody's attempts to understand #Mastodon. People focus on bigger instances with more active users.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were instances filtered out for which:

1. The active user count is small

2. The active users rarely post images

3. Of the images that are posted, 100% of them have alt text.

But they don't matter, because they're not big.

I feel like everybody has lost track of what we're talking about regarding gender-neutral bathrooms. They're typically single-occupancy restrooms, with a lockable door.

Is there anybody in the US who's arguing for "people of all genders should use open-on-top-and-bottom stalls in multi-occupancy restrooms together”?

A specific and technical question about #Fediverse, #ActivityPub, and #Mastodon:

If boost a toot, I understand how and where that toot gets propagated to other instances. If that toot is the beginning of a thread or a reply, do any other toots in the thread get propagated as well?

Practically speaking, if I boost the beginning of the thread, can I assume any replies are visible to all my off-instance followers? If I boost a reply to a thread, can I assume the beginning toot is?

This would disappoint me. I do like Rey, and I liked the Sequel Trilogy more than most people, but if another Skywalker is key to the next phase of big screen Star Wars, then that means that so many other stories aren’t.

I really liked the plan of exploring other stories in the galaxy, including Mandalore and even Darth Plagueis (RIP The Acolyte).

In The Clone Wars and Rebels, Feloni showed us a much wider galaxy, and I want to live in it!

To take a stab at answering my own question, I think maybe it is my job to be the internet police, or maybe watchdog would be a better term. Not tone police, of course, but disrespectful, abusive behaviors, yes. That job falls to all of us who believe in a respectful, civil society.

And so the more each of us does stand up, the more normalized doing so becomes, and the more others are willing to help. In other words, leading by example can be a powerful strategy.

I'm pondering a paradox of social media.

On the one hand, we must speak out. We must stand up for and support each other. We must actively stand against abuse and prejudice in all of their forms.

On the other hand, it's unwise to feed the trolls. It is not my job to be the internet police, for tone or even truth.

With so much bad behavior, even here in the Fediverse, how do I reconcile these?
