Procrastinating on the sapphic nonsense I should be writing by writing DIFFERENT sapphic nonsense.

I am a parody of myself.

I did not expect Raw (2016) to be a spiritual sequel to Ginger Snaps but BOY am I not complaining

"I'm having a real problem with the flesh tunnels, because there's really only so many ways to say that something is warm and wet" - me, just now.

Ah, the writing life.

Apparently people were disappointed it wasn't as weird as The Lighthouse? It's an adaptation of Dracula, it was never going to be as weird as The Lighthouse. I felt it still had loads of Robert Eggers' distinct verve, though!

Saw Nosferatu today; I thought it absolutely slapped.

Impressively horny film! Not gratuitously so - the entire story is about sex.

Or, more accurately, it's about living in a messy, failing, slowly-withering body that is filled with monstrous desire. It's about the relationship between lust and the death drive. It rules!!!!

My friend: yeah, I'm really enjoying that the novel I'm working on isn't exorcising any inner demons, I need a break from that before I get burned out.

Me, realising that the exhaustion I have around writing might be connected to the 'what if the world is fucked beyond repair' novel, the 'horror of female beauty standards' novel, and the 'complicated feelings about Oxford' novel: ............OH.

I wrote 76,503 words this year!!!! (+ some sessions I forgot to put on the spreadsheet) 🥳 🥳 🥳

Next year I want to write even more and shift the ratio away from fanfic towards original fiction!

God help me, I'm getting nostalgic for essay crunches.

They're never a GOOD time, but idk! Something nice about being able to put literally everything else in my life on hold while I blitz a single project through to completion. Maybe it's the adrenaline rush.

I did like Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth's cameo, though. It went on too long and they were noticeably way stronger singers than the leads. But it was cute and good and it made me happy. So. Points for that, I guess.

The bigger criticism is that Elphaba wasn't nearly autistic enough. Entire film deathly allergic to the audience not finding Elphaba cool for a single second. She's pathetic!!!! She's overemotional!!!!!! She's cringe!!!!! This is vital to her characterisation, actually!!!!!!!

There was a lot to complain about but the main thing sticking in my mind is the staggering lack of imagination in Defying Gravity.

They just have Elphaba floating there, stationary, like she does in the stage show! This works on stage because she's just gone up on a wire!!! It looks great visually and also it's physically impressive because the actress is belting at the top of her lungs while also hoisted into the air in a harness that compresses her lungs!!!! IT LOOKS LIKE GARBAGE IN A FILM.

Found some v v old notes from back when I was working on IDoSL! The inital concept was SO much more ambitious, oh my god. I was never going to be able to make that in a year, in software I'd never used before.
