Christopher Walken claims that he has never "emailed."

In death, the rest of us will be stuck in purgatory, cleaning out our overgrown inboxes, while he ascends. Untouched, immaculate.

πŸ“ž Exciting new (open access!) article from Jacob Bruggeman comparing "telephone enthusiasts" in the UK and phone #phreaking in the US. He argues compellingly that each contributed to a global movement of telco hackers.

Love this note about the availability of documentation: "To anyone paying close attention, the electronic keys to the telephone systems of both countries were ready for the taking."

For anyone bringing #AI into their teaching this term, Tom Haigh just shared the syllabus for a new course titled "A Short History of Artificial Intelligence" (based on his forthcoming book). The supplemental readings offer a nice slice through the literature, from subject area experts to popular perspectives.

My office is moving to Zoom phones. Has anyone set up a VoIP-analog gateway that will ring a conventional POTS phone? I want to rig up an unholy connection to a Model 500 over twisted pair! πŸ””πŸ‘Ήβ˜ŽοΈ

From Jacob B reflecting on this yt clip of two buds jamming on a CD-J:

"Your friends are gassing you up, and no one's dunking on anyone, they're just dunking. Everyone in the cipher smiling so hard their faces hurt."

That's the nrg I want for the month ahead:

"No one's dunking on anyone, they're just dunking"

Shaping up to be a chaotic year in email. I've already been added to two gigantic raw CC lists this year. BCC is for narcs. Solidarity with my fellow recipients, whoever you are.

Love this passage from Hua Hsu on the limits of Spotify streaming data to capture the significance of music:

"The most meaningful songs of my life aren't always ones I can listen to over and over. They're there when I need them."

I remember Holly Herndon making a similar argument about recordings you hear just once that nonetheless flip your whole perspective.

Repetition, spins, streams, clicks, and views are such partial measures of value.

Trying to imagine what it was like being a senior in high school in 2020. Your school closes for "2 weeks" and just...never reopens! No graduation, no prom, no senior skip day, no rites, no rituals. It's mind-bending.

And these kids in Brampton ON end up creating a huge inspiring chaotic music/video collective: https://musicblog.substack.com/p/interview-doflame
