We’ve decided to do a linocut print for our Patreon #NewYearCard. It was nice to spend the last days of 2024 carving and printing by hand. We love this technique!

After that, the design was carved on 7 woodblocks (1 for the line & 6 for colors) by Taran Casey (from Ginko Hanga). It was a huge work that demanded many days and a lot of dexterity. You can watch the whole process on his YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIYfuYO1sHY

We used a Pentel brush pen to draw beautiful lines, close to ones of traditional ukiyoe prints. It was challenging for us because we are not used to ink with brushes. We’ll try to improve our skills with the next design.

Last step: watercolors! 🎨

Since our illustrations have very detailed lines and shadows, we can use simple colors. We also try not to be too subtle because colors may disappear when printed if they are too light.

Inking the illustration with a 8B graphite pencil. It allows both sharp lines and large ones, subtle greys and dark blacks. What a high tech tool!

The illustration was drawn on a watercolor paper (Arche maybe…) using a 8B graphite pencil (Faber-Castell) and a light pad. This the way we “ink”. It gives a sketchy look to our images and we like that.
