This seems like a well articulated warning that is kinda important in the US right now (and likely soon to be very important in Canada too). What is your moment when the proverbial Rubicon has been crossed?

As the public is being numbed by an ever escalating barrage of horribleness, it really is important to remind yourself that a point of no return exists. And that you should know where that point is for you.

"Carney says he'll scrap the carbon tax, introduce green incentive program"

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-to-scrap-carbon-tax-1.7446908

So instead of a green incentive program we will get a green incentive program. Got it. Totally trust this will work, seeing the godlike logic applied to carbon tax right there.

Unsurprising that he is an economist.

I feel RPGs generally tend to approach their own mechanics as something implicit rather than explicit. I have very rarely seen a book talk openly about intentions and expectations behind the mechanics. It tends to be obscured by lofty segments about themes, story structure, in-universe prose etc. Which is all well and good, but in addition to that, I'd really like to read some plain intentionality.

I don't know why that is. Perhaps it feels cheap for the author to pull back the curtain?

I cannot stress enough how much what is happening is a textbook scenario of overinvesting before proving a system's usefulness.

And that is a direct result of companies posturing for investors rather than delivering value.

If you know anything about Warhammer 40K,

you know about Horus Heresy. Emperor's (disputedly) favored son who headed the crusade at some point threw a hissy fit, became the champion of Chaos, turned on the Emperor and made half of all Space Marines cosplay as GWAR cover bands. But the specifics were always hazy.

So of course Games Workshop did what they do best and produced 64 whole books detailing the entire thing, finally bringing it to a conclusion last year after nearly two decades

Warhammer 40K is, of course, known for miniatures that cost more than gold and a hyperproduction of word-containing things that could charitably be called books, at the peril of having the world wide librarian alliance call a blood hunt on you.

I have recently listened to the first three audiobooks of Horus Heresy and, inexplicably, here I will review them as if they were actual literature.

Spoiler: they are pretty bad. But in a fun way.

So I just found out that apparently as of two days ago, everyone in the USA is a woman. Executive orders and such.

With that in mind, I guess the country finally got its first woman president.

About once a year, I find myself thinking it would be a great idea to learn Lojban. And then I never actually do.

Today is such a day.

Regarding this full frontal assault on diversity in the US.

It was I believe 2016, and I had just recently joined Amazon. We had an all-hands, which at the time could actually fit into a single (large) room. @timbray spoke at the end, and one thing he said really resonated with me. I have been frequently referencing it, especially to junior engineers, ever since. I am slightly paraphrasing:

By any objective measure, a diverse group of people is going to be smarter.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/kingston-ontario-declares-food-insecurity-emergency-1.7436000

I literally broke down in tears just now, after reading this. Hey #Canada, can we stop doing that thing where our reaction to literally everything is - at least it's better than the US? How is everyone so calm when people are existentially endangered and our healthcare is falling apart?

I know providing food for Kingston would cost almost as much as a border helicopter we promised to the southern chaos agent, but surely it can at least rank right behind it?

As various Canadian politicians come out talking a big game about pushing back on Trump tariffs, I would just like to remind everyone that we had 8 years to decrease our dependence on the US since the last time the exact same thing was happening and did nothing about it.

Full confession: my early 20s self absolutely identifies with the overly frowny, darkly clad person layered with gender-ambiguous makeup finally succumbing to stupid happy pop tunes.

There are exactly two songs that are instant happiness for me. One is The Lovecats by The Cure, because I am a man of culture. The other one is this:

https://youtu.be/pATX-lV0VFk?si=4FpHXhJZGPyM8rxa

(Opus - Live Is Life)

And it absolutely has to be the video, just the song isn't enough. The scenography, the character work, the plot. It is The Warriors by way of 80s Saturday morning cartoons. It is so sincerely tacky and kitschy that it will shoot right past any critical thinking shield you might otherwise put up.

I need a new word for the phenomenon where you haven't been playing RPGs for a while but spent so much time reading, planning, hoping, imagining finally sitting down to play that a real game no longer has any hope of meeting the expectations you have now inadvertently built up in your head.

A term I just learned about that really describes everything right now: hypernormalisation. The elaborate pretense that clearly and obviously failing systems are not failing and everything is ok. Originally coined to describe life just before the Soviet Union collapsed, but also applies to late stage capitalism.

Crucially, it does not imply a conspiracy. It is engaged in by the majority of society, because the alternative is unbearable and unimaginable.

There are many, many reasons I do not want to vote for the Liberals, but Carney did a good job with Jon Stewart. He had a few comments slip by that I hated, but overall a pretty decent nugget of self marketing. If it comes down to Carney and Freeland for Liberal leadership, you know what? Not the worst scenario.

Now we just need Singh to step down and have NDP give us an actual option. Because I desperately need them to grow up and not feel like a vote for them is wasted.

Danielle Smith is, very much expectedly, a sellout and, even more sadly, an unsuccessful one at that. Anyone supporting her deeply despises Canada.

Also, I am terribly worried that... um. I have some vaguely positive thoughts about Doug Ford. I feel dirty.

There is a school conference in our school district. Keynote speaker is someone who wrote a book about "parenting in the age of entitlement" and I had to stop reading the invitation immediately because my eyes rolled all the way back until I was only able to see the back of my skull.

Well that is quite a large box. Two hardcover books, dice, screen, pregen character pack, some other stuff. Still have to actually dig into it, but I am digging the vibe and the more streamlined tag based mechanics seem pretty interesting.

My actual Facebook usage boils down to a handful of groups, most of which are gaming related. A few World of Darkness ones are actually top notch, surprisingly.

I am now going to delete my Facebook account and I don't think I have a replacement for them. People point to various Discord servers as alternatives, but I have never been able to get much use out of Discord.

Any suggestions here? This place (and Bluesky) aside, of course.
