Perhaps this is the push I need to try Twin Peaks again. I tried once and got 3 episodes in.

AI is stoopid, case #7,409

I wondered whether ChatGPT 4o could do cryptic crossword clues.

I learnt that it absolutely cannot do anagrams.

From our recent chat:

"Re-arranging "BROTHERHOOD" gives HOVERBOARD, a form of transport."

"Take BROTHERHOOD (11 letters) and remove one O (possibly implied by "over").

Anagramming the remaining letters and incorporating a "W" (for women's), we get BOARDWAGON."

And then, finally:

"After careful rethinking, the anagram of BROTHERHOOD + W gives HORSE-DRAWN.

🤦🏼🤷🏼

I’ve finished watching season one of Severance (for the third time) ahead of season two starting very soon. What are people’s fave writings about the show?

I gave them ten minutes then shut down my Zoom. It's not like I'm not still sitting by my computer, but, you know.

How long does one wait for a student to arrive (late) at a Zoom meeting they themselves chose the time for?

21st century idiocy on proud display yesterday in my neighbourhood: When I went out to the shops, I saw a man in a parked car trying to stop its alarm from going off. By the time I was walking back from the shops, the car was surrounded by people, including medics and firemen. It turned out that this electric car had shut itself down, preventing its driver from getting out of the car. He was able to make his escape when a fireman smashed a window with an axe. 🫤

I am recommending this book to fellow academics, but it is also - and this is very much the authors' intention - a book that I would (actually, will) buy my brother for Chanukah.

It makes an argument that feels familiar but really is novel and fascinating. It doesn't shy away from the horrifying futures that might be awaiting us, but suggests how we might avert the worst ones in a way that isn't pithy (this coming from an Englishman). It is packed full of examples. And while the text is fairly clean from academic jargon, if you're an academic you know exactly where the authors are placing themselves.

I write this with some embarrassment, because I have read this book rather slowly, only at times when I knew I could sit and concentrate on it - and god knows (as does @aram) that these have been few and far between for the last year or so, but: I just finished reading The Secret Life of Data by @aram and @jesse) and let me tell you that it is quite brilliant. Somehow it talks to me as an academic and as an interested layman at the same time.

Waking up after two or three quite stressful dreams is worse than waking up without having had stressful dreams.

I got an email from @guardian about their commitment to the planet. I will take this more seriously when they stop publishing recipes for meat.

Our findings suggest that while podcasts have unique potential for connection, the “intimacy” created is often one-way and self-focused.🤳

Interestingly, many podcasters’ ideas of intimacy actually reflect their own experiences and dispositions rather than those of the listeners—a concept we call inverse parasocial relationships.⏭️
