After spending six weeks sitting in a room in the nursing home, being able to sit out on the porch in a rocking chair with my mom watching the squirrels play on a 70 degree afternoon is just about heaven.

It's a beautiful day in Middle Georgia. I made my last trek to the nursing home 35 minutes away, and got Mama settled into her new digs in the assisted living facility about 5 minutes from her house. Woohoo!

I have vowed not to let what is happening consume me. Again. But I have failed. I am consumed. With impotent rage and fear. It helps to know that I am not alone, but god these are scary times. Will I be able to get a full night's sleep in the next 4 years? We Americans haven't lived through the kind of crisis that I fear lurks around the corner. The fat idiots who yell at their huge flat screen TVs about how hard they have it have no fucking clue what they have done to us all.

With all of the focus on efficiency in government, my question is just how much are we wasting by firing workers who represent literally thousands of years of institutional knowledge? By paying people to re-write documents and paint walls to eliminate any hint that fairness and equality were once valued? To literally erase history?

We're all smiles this week. With Buddy's help, Mama improved greatly. Doc cleared her for full weight bearing, and everything is set for her to transfer to the assisted living facility on Tuesday. Buddy is good medicine. #Caturday

One of the silver linings to my sojourn in middle GA during my mother's convalescence has been getting to spend time with my stepsister as an adult. Marriages and many miles have kept us apart excepting the occasional holiday or funeral. She was 13 when she came to live with us, and my little sister and I were the brattiest, most annoying little sisters she could have had. It has been fun to see that she is every bit as cool at 72 as I thought she was as a teenager when I was raiding her closet.

I am unreasonably proud to have mastered the task of paying a new bill from Italy on the first try. This task is usually accomplished with much cursing, gnashing of teeth and tears. But I did it, quickly and efficiently. Yay me. As much as I love life in Italy, trying to navigate these systems in a foreign language can be exhausting. Of course, living for the past month between the nursing home and the middle of nowhere middle GA has me ready to get back.

I spent yesterday holed up at my friend's house because middle Georgia can't deal with snow. So it seems that Mama spent the time scouring the Internet for news about all of the things that Trump has been doing, and she has decided that he is the Antichrist. Can I just say O. M. G. As I've spent the past 4 weeks with Mama, it has been hard to avoid politics. But as I said, she has tried to steer clear of politics so much that she has avoided the news. As I've gently told her what Trump is up to, it has been like watching someone who has been hibernating for 20 years return to life. "He did WHAT?" She was a loyal civil servant for 30+ years, so she is just flabbergasted. Finding out that Trump didn't put his hand on the Bible broke something in her. 3/

Just before this election, when she threatened that she would not vote, I pulled out the nuclear weapon and told her that if Trump was elected, we would be spending the next 4 years in Italy. She had to hide it from the rest of the family, but she couldn't vote for me not to come home. 2/

I have to talk about politics and my mom. Forgive me if I ramble, but I'm still trying to process. In 2016, I didn't speak to my mom for six months over politics. She was a Trump supporter and I almost had a nervous breakdown after the election. It took us a solid week of serious face-to-face time, and many tears, to reach ground zero. We kind of established a stand off and she has steered clear of anything remotely political since then. 1/
