Once I got over the irony of the opemAI deepseek thing I realised something important.

Assuming that the tiny cost to train DeepSeek was due to using open AIs APIs. That still means for $6M or so they managed to create a vastly faster, smaller and better version of chatgtp.

OpenAI got $6 billion in their last funding round that's 1000x more and have failed to do anything like that. I'm sure they have much better access to the data than the public API allows. All they do is throw more power at it and hope it works.

Ok so the #proton offending toot has been deleted, but that still leaves the CEO in place. I don't mind a CEO having opinions, even bad ones, but they should not use the company account to post them. Even musk doesn't do that.

Of course I didn't think the problem was so much identifying potholes, it's more that there isn't enough money to fix them.

At the supermarket I see "beefy popcorn". I'm very tempted to buy some for myself before I realized I'm in the dog food section.

When I saw #davidbowie at Glastonbury in 2000 I thought him an old man. Now I'm approaching that age myself I realise he was middle aged.

So last day of 2024. It's been a bit of a holding year. Most of the bad stuff had already started in 2023 and it's just been a deterioration.

However I think 2025 will be different, not in a good way. Here are my fwiw predictions

It occurs to me these are not milestones.

A goal for 2030 which is outside this parliament is a goal. A milestone is a step on the way to a goal.

A milestone would be, " within 12 months we will do X on the way to doing Y at some later date"

Then you can be judged on if you hit the milestone or not.

So really more bad messaging and posturing

Living dangerously. I was making cup a soup. But couldn't find a good cup so I put it in a bowl.

I'm not sure what cosmic consequences this transgression will have.

Life with a tween. They get commendation from school for "knowledge recall" when we ask them what it was that they recalled they "can't remember"

One of my kids "friends" decided to blow up the Minecraft house they had all been working on for ages. Taking with it the sheep that had been better there since the beginning.

They are understandably upset. Once mobs are gone they are gone. But now I have an itch to make a "pet cemetery" mod. If a named mod dies it comes back... But not quite the same.

This is sad. £40m is loose change for a lot of companies.

They should have said they were using AI. I'm sure an AI hamster feeder could get get funding

I wonder if #openai deliberately hires temperamental and paranoid people to its security team. It's great PR when they quit.

https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/lily-allen-feet-pictures-make-more-money-spotify-streams-1235811354/

This is interesting. Not the feet part.

According to this #spotify pays $4,077 a day for her streams. Which is $120,000 a month. She gets less than 1/10th of that.

Someone somewhere is quietly making a fortune from streaming. The artists blame Spotify for low income but in cases like this it seems that "the label" is taking a huge cut.

TIL that you can't just use a hex editor to mess with the colour palette on a PNG as there is a checksum on the pallet chunk value.
