Never a dull moment on the social web.
Today, not only did the Mastodon project announce a new organizational structure https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/01/the-people-should-own-the-town-square/ , a new non-profit project with high-profile supporters called "Free Our Feeds" aims to replicate some core Bluesky infrastructure to keep it "away from the billionaires". https://www.usermag.co/p/freeourfeeds-a-30m-plan-to-take-back-social-media-from-billionaires
We can be sure there will be sessions about this at the upcoming FediForum online unconference.

You'll notice we changed our registration platform from EventBrite to Humanitix. That's still not a Fediverse-enabled platform (there doesn't seem to be one that has the features we need) but it's much nicer than Eventbrite, and they donate all their profits to various good causes.
Ticket prices remain the same.

Mark Zuckerberg announces Meta is getting rid of fact checkers and acknowledges more harmful content will appear on Meta's platforms now.
What a great day to announce the next FediForum, the leading event to move the open Social Web forward.

We are thinking of changing the tagline of FediForum to:
"The unconference for the people who move the social web forward."
Instead of "move the Fediverse forward".
Thoughts?

FediForum got a mention in Mastodon's 4.3 release update letter: at FediForum, the Mastodon team announced their new Fediverse Discovery Providers project.
Lots of other good updates from the Mastodon project, too.

By popular demand (really! There was a repeat chorus at the last FediForum) ...
We added https://fediforum.org/projects/ to the website -- a list of projects / working groups / communities that were started at a FediForum event.
Chances are we missed something, please let us know if we did.
Currently this list is only about projects started or restarted at FediForum, but it could be a broader list, starting perhaps with projects that ran sessions at FediForum. What do you think?

The session notes from all #FediForum September 2024 sessions are now available.
They represent an incredible body of knowledge about the latest thinking by many of the people who move today's Fediverse forward.
Plus links to the speed demos of all the cool Fediverse software we saw.
Happy reading, and happy watching!

The new Social Web Foundation is launching today. https://socialwebfoundation.org/2024/09/24/launch/
@evan held early community feedback sessions at FediForum e.g. here: https://fediforum.org/2024-03/session/3-a/ and it's good for the #fediverse and the #socialweb that the organization is now live!

Is it bad form to publicly note that there's no mention of FediForum on Wikipedia? Not sure what the acceptable conventions are...
Are we notable yet?

What's a good way format to use as a banner for #PeerTube accounts, which also looks reasonable when accessed from #Mastodon?
Our banner looks nice here: https://spectra.video/c/fediforum_demos but left and right are cut off here: https://mastodon.social/@fediforum_demos@spectra.video

The FediForum September 2024 speed demo videos are now also available on YouTube.

Still encourage you to follow and like in the Fediverse instead, where the same videos are on PeerTube -- and have a nice playlist cover.

The demo videos from #FediForum September 2024 are now on-line.
Fourteen demos of cool #Fediverse software, as shown off by the developers themselves! Innovation is alive and kicking in the Fediverse!
Given this is the Fediverse, get them from PeerTube here: https://spectra.video/w/p/q1BXeNF5PWFipFy5f44v9h
(They are on YouTube, too, but we will post the link to there later.)

FediForum attendees literally came from around the world. Six continents, and a few extra islands!
We added a world map to https://fediforum.org that shows where they were from.
Thanks @islekcaganmert for the idea!

Thanks, all, who made this FediForum another great event!
An unconference like FediForum becomes great because of the attendees -- you! -- who ran 50 (!!!) sessions over the three half days we had this time, with amazing deep-dives on an incredible breath of subjects. Thank you!!
We'll publish session notes and demo videos as soon as possible on https://fediforum.org
In the meantime, if you want to know about the next #FediForum, there's a link to leave your contact info on our front page.

Maybe the common phrase for FediForum, mentioned by so many attendees is:
"It's so exciting...!"

FediForum Day 2 starts in one hour!
Yesterday we had 19 sessions on a broad range of #Fediverse topics from the very technical to -- believe it or not -- politics, and everything in between. We also saw 5 demos of cool Fediverse apps. And a new working group was started!
People had fun! Today it will be very similar.
