[#]Today I negotiated with my husband that I would clear the shower drain if he would do the morning animal chores that I usually do. This let me start my day a bit slower and feel less pressured in general. It was a nice change of pace. Now I’m snuggled up in my studio with brunch and tea. #Food

[#]TimeTravelAuthors Jan 25: Excerpt (optional word: hold)

By New Year’s Eve it was well and truly winter and going anywhere meant trudging through snow while the wind tried its best to work past your defenses. Michelle held up a dress, the skirt hit mid thigh on her fluffy pajama pants. A swirl of glitter pushed past her window with a howl and she wondered why nobody threw pajama parties for New Year’s.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 25 do you have a worked-out magical system? Or do you make it to as you go?

Consistency is super important to me, so I’m pantsing my way through but I work to keep things making sense as I go. If the story takes me in a direction that means magic earlier isn’t consistent, I’ll make a note to myself that I need to go back in the second draft said work that out. By the time I reach the end I’ve gotten something ironed out.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 24: How long is the longest story you’ve ever written?

My novel that I published last year, Mending Madeline, is around 73k words. I’m pretty comfortable at that length and I expect most of my work will end up there.

It’s available in all the places, here’s the link to Kobo.

[#]Today was fish basket Friday at a favorite local restaurant and my 9 yr old son LOVES the fish basket. So I asked Bonny if he wanted to go for a ride, he did, and we went to get some take out.

I have learned my lesson, big dogs set off the seat belt alarm in the passenger seat. So I buckled the seat belt first this time before getting him in. He had a great time hanging his head out the window.

[#]TimeTravelAuthors Jan 23: Are climate change, mass extinction or any other disasters a factor?

There is a vague threat of certain disaster that must be avoided, but it’s never specified what it is exactly.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 23: Do you think it’s vital for a fiction writer to have empathy?

Oof. Well let me see.

If we define empathy as being able to acutely imagine other people’s emotional reactions, then I’d say it would make for stories I’d personally enjoy more. Personally i enjoy characters with some depth and emotional reactions that make sense. Could you write something well received without that? I’m sure, it just wouldn’t be for me.

This year I’m using stickers to decorate my journal and it’s a lot of fun. I’m flipping through my sticker book and I use whatever random page I land on. It leads to pages like today which are not really my style, but fun to do. It is also very low pressure and fun.

Then of course I have to pick an ink that matches the layout. Today I’ll use FWP Nebulous Blue, which of course is in the Esterbrook Nebulous Plume.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 22: What prompted you to begin writing?

I’m going to answer this before I’ve read other people’s responses, and i wonder how many will say something similar? I don’t remember starting to write, as in starting to tell stories. I’ve always had a wild imagination and loved to share it.

An easier question is what prompted me to get serious about writing? That was finally having the confidence and support to prioritize it. It was a long time coming.

One of my goals this year is to read more self published books, so respond here if you’ve got something I should read!

I’m not a high fantasy, sword and sorcery fan. Ditto for Dune style sci-fi. I am awed at the skill required to write it but don’t enjoy reading it right now.

I am currently enjoying magical realism, upbeat sci-fi, urban fantasy and HEA Romance. I do love horror, specifically paranormal horror.

I started a new solo journaling RPG called “Sweaters by Hedgehog”. It’s exactly the cozy, low stakes thing I need to have on hand when I want to relax.

Today a Bat P.I. named Sheryl came into my shop, looking for a no frills sweater to keep her warm on stakeouts. I suggested stripes in brown, black and grey to help her blend in.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 21: What difference do you find in your process if you write both short and long-form?

With a short story I’m much less worried about “show, don’t tell”. With a novel I’m always on the lookout for places that I’m creating a montage rather than creating individual scenes. Other than that i write pretty much everything the same way, I rush in where angels fear to tread. “I have an IDEA!”

Book 5 of 2025 is First Do No Charm by @JoanGrey Joan Grey. It’s so much fun, and so refreshing, to read about a main character in her 40’s. And she’s not a hot mess with a demon child, she doesn’t hate her parents. I’m so glad I picked it up.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 20: Do any of your stories take place on the sea?

Not on the sea, as in on a boat. But certainly coastal. One short story in particular has my characters in the ocean.

I was born in a coastal town and consider the coast home, so bits of that end up here and there in my writing.

[#]TimeTravelAuthors Jan 19: Difficulties with period jargon or language between time periods?

Not in my time travel story, language differences don’t feature.

In my WIP novel I have a teenaged ghost who died during the Spanish flu pandemic. Researching slang to color his dialogue was lots of fun.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 19: Did you find a way through the maze of traditional publishing?

To be honest I haven’t tried very hard. There is validation in being traditionally published, and goodness knows I’d like to make money. But the more I learn the more I think I want to embrace being independent.

The state of the world has really made me want to hunker down into counter culture and independence. Away from “the system”, so my feelings about publishing are very much an extension of that.
