Yeah, I'm not a Linux admin, but I feel your pain. My one big software accomplishment is a ham radio logging program that kept everything in an easily greppable one-line-per-record format. For various reasons, I went to someone else's open source program--which stores everything in a database. And can be serialized in an inscruptable "standard" format that's sort of a bastardized xml. (We love angle brackets, don't we?)
Give me grep anyday.

Another periodical gripe about Apple, xcode, and licensing: Surely it's a violation of the GPL to require me to agree to the xcode license to use GNU Bison? I find myself forced to agree to this license every few months just to use some software that Apple had no role in developing.

Reading about how AI solves captchas better than humans. I've never been fond of captcha, BUT--as an alternative--how about captchas that AIs can solve, but humans can't? Like "what are the letters" in which the letter color is indistinguishable from the background color to a human?

Last night at about 2AM, I saw the brightest meteor I've ever seen. Looked it up this morning, and we're at the peak of the Taurids.

Yeah, that's precisely it. I like the hardware (though I have an Android phone), but the software is increasingly a problem.

I'm not a M$ fan, but the way system updates are handled on Windows is so much better than on macOS. A few minutes instead of a half hour or more; no need to log in partway through. Somewhere along the way Apple lost its clue. (And not just wrt updates, but that's what I'm bitching about now.)

Random technobabble: I'm on vacation in PDX, and noticed that my phone is on 5G. Signal is good. So I did a performance test (I only have 4G LTE at home).
5G is worse on all metrics (latency, download, upload.)
Not sure how to explain this, except that I've always believed 5G was seriously overhyped. Anyone want to make bets on 6G?

BBC article: Myanmar's army massacred Rohingyas. Now it wants their help https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-68730994 I'd like to understand this phenomenon. My grandfather was conscripted into the Turkish army during the massacre of the Armenians and Greeks. He deserted (ending up in the US.) He died young, so I never heard his story--just the family myth. Is conscripting the people you're killing a thing? Perhaps so.
