I hate bailing on the underlying truth of any problem, but I'm just not willing to spend a few weeks figuring out how consoles get mapped to video cards in Linux. I've found a band-aid that solves my problem (actually it involves ripping off an old band-aid that is no longer needed). Fuck it. I want my old comprehensible Unix back.

If you don't live in #Toronto you won't get the joke:

[#]Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster has announced his departure, but won't tell anybody when his term will be finished.

I tried, for example, asking chatgpt

-- say david

David

-- say mayer

Mayer

-- say them together

(Red-tinted error box: I'm unable to produce a response)

Via Justine Moore @venturetwins on the old place:

ChatGPT refuses to say the name “David Mayer,” and no one knows why.

If you try to get it to write the name, the chat immediately ends.

People have attempted all sorts of things - ciphers, riddles, tricks - and nothing works.

[#]TIL #Linux has a fourth timestamp field on files: `btime' or birth time or when the file was created. (As distinct from ctime, around in #Unix since the 1970s, which is when the i-node was last changed--file contents or metadata--even though some people still get confused and think c stands for create.)

Since it's beyond #POSIX, stat(2) doesn't return it; Linux-specific statx(2) does. stat(1) prints it.

Useful for forensic debugging, which is how I stumbled on it.

I'm not a fan of parades or of Christmas music, but the carols played by a steel band I hear from down the block--where the Santa Claus parade is warming up--are kinda pleasant. Also kinda #Toronto.

[#]BoringTravel Boarding started some minutes after scheduled departure, but us Business Class passengers had to wait: some delay servicing the Business Class cars.

Yes, plural: two Business cars today. First time I've seen that. I boarded the wrong one at first. I'll go up and get the big bag I left in the first car's luggage rack later.

Anyway I'm on board now.

To be fair, it's probably Roy Thompson Hall making the rules; the TSO are just clients. But I want them to make noise about it.

I stopped in at the Patron Services desk to register my displeasure, and I plan to send e-mail (they gave me an address) as well. Should check whether RTH get arts funding from the city too.
