29.2°C at 08:00 here in Brisbane… last night at 21:00 it was still over 30°C.

Had the fan going all night … and people want to heat the planet even more???

Tomorrow, I return to the office.

I wonder what house of horrors awaits me there.

So… some parts arrived for the server cluster today… installed a shiny new 240GB SSD and a case fan (hopefully it clears the DIN rail).

Boot up AlpineLinux: MCE errors halting the kernel.

Looks like I might be doing some more debugging yet.

That took its sweet time… noticed that my Mastodon server had two PostgreSQL servers installed, 16 an 17… it was using 16 for Mastodon.

I figured before I get them mixed up, migrate to 17.

So pg_dumpall on 16 … wait … then psql restore on 17.

… zzz … 1¼ hours later … finally we're back up.

I also bumped to Mastodon 4.3.3 … there's apparently a denial-of-service possible when cleaning up deleted remote accounts.

Bushwalking wasn't the only exercise though… I needed to do a milk run, so stopped off and got a bit of weight training in at the same time.

Today my mother and I did our weekly bushwalk… on this occasion we did a walk on the Eugenia circuit at Mt. Coot-tha.

For this, we parked at Grey Gums picnic area, just beside Channel 7. The recent rains meant I had an opportunity to play around with some long exposure photos at Simpson's Falls… which are flowing quite strongly.

The total distance covered was ~3km. It took us about 1½ hours.

Tonight the Mastodon server here wanted to give me grief uploading photos.

I am tempted to possibly deploy a Pixelfed server here… I did nearly deploy that instead of Mastodon actually.

The server here was running on a KVM VM with 1 VCPU and 2GiB RAM… workable… but a little on the skimpy side.

I'm not short of RAM, and in any case, I'll soon have two refurbished Intel Atom C2750 servers with 32GiB a piece of ECC DDR3… so noisy neighbours can be moved.

For now I've just bumped this VM to 4 VCPUs and 4GiB RAM. That seems to have given things a boot along.

We'll see how that goes.

Angus had a good sniff and roll around in the sand… getting loads of gritty ocean sand in his fur.

I guess he found the smells irresistible.

Been meaning to post these photos up… I was reminded today when I got the camera out for another purpose.

At low-tide, the sand-bar between Wellington Point and King Island is dry, allowing foot and cycle traffic between the two points across that small bit of Moreton Bay.

The Wednesday before last, one of my cousins was up from Sydney visiting the wife's family… and organised to meet up with us. It's the first time I had met his wife and kids.

Weather was overcast at first, but it opened up to be a nice sunny day.

I know this was written nearly 21 years ago… and at the time it was referencing the #SCO vs #Linux case… but I can't help but see the parallels between that, and #AI scraping our shitposts for profit…

Arrived by email… thankfully I don't get any of these anymore (they can't figure out the IVR menu prompt on the home telephone) but I have to give the woman a mark for originality…

A phone conversation with a very nice young chap from Pakistan. This is how it went:

"Hello, how are you today?"

"I'm very well thank you for asking, how are you and more to the point, WHO are you?"

"Madam, my name is Sanjit, and I'm calling you from Microsoft."

"Microsoft, is that a city in Pakistan?"

"No Madam, MICROSOFT, the computer company. I'm calling to tell you that we have found a problem with your computer."

"REALLY, that's quite concerning."

"Yes Madam, it can become very serious indeed but thankfully I will be able to fix it for you."

"No, I meant it's very concerning because I don't HAVE a computer."

“You don't?"

“No."

"Ahh, it must be a problem on your laptop Madam."

"Don't have one."

"Ipad?"

"Nope."

"Tablet?"

"I have none of those things. As a matter of fact, I don't even have a telephone."

After a few seconds of silence he said "Madam, you are lying to me now!"

I said "Well, you started it!!" and put the phone down.

So, I scavenge a SSD, plug it in... lo and behold, this thing still has #Gentoo on it. This OS will be ancient. Also worth noting, one "tux" for each CPU core: don't boot this in a tuxedo!

The second one has passed as well.

So I need a 12V 5A LDO to replace the one I accidentally ripped legs off years ago, a SSD for the second node, and I might se if I can get a 12v PSU better suited to the 1U server that has been sitting around unused for a couple of years now.
