I switched my default search to DuckDuckGo (https://duckduckgo.com/) last year. I don't miss Google at all.

I've made some changes the booksellers that are included in Ethical Book Search (https://www.ethicalbooksearch.com/).

I've added Elliot Bay Book Company in the US, and also added World of Books for many more countries.

I've removed Astbury Book Cooperative, City of Asylum Books, Raven Book Stores, Thalia and WHSmith because we can no longer access their book catalogues.

I am pleased with the recent switch I made to ghostty (https://ghostty.org/), as my terminal emulator. It just works.

The trigger for changing was that macOS Terminal.app still doesn't support true color, and this is required for most of the Helix editor themes.

An added bonus of switching is that now I can manage my terminal config with a TOML file (rather than a set of preference panes).

Thanks to @mitchellh and everyone else who has contributed to ghostty's development.

'Write super boring code. Write naive but obvious code. “Premature optimization is the root of all evil”. If it was too simple, you can always make it more complex later. And that moment might never arrive. Don’t write clever code until you simply have to. You will not ever regret writing code that was simple.'

"When you negotiate on estimates, you may be able to persuade people to change what they’re saying and agree to things they hadn’t intended to — indeed, many senior stakeholders have years of negotiation experience. But in this case, unlike the car, you’ve changed nothing about the underlying reality. You’ve all agreed to say things are possible, but all you’ve won is disappointment."

Thank you to all of you who have bought books through Ethical Book Search (https://www.ethicalbooksearch.com) this year. You know who you are 😃

By doing this you been supporting more ethical booksellers who treat their workers, the environment and society better than some. Also thanks to you we were able to donate £129 to Room to Read (https://www.roomtoread.org/) in 2024.

This is half our affiliate revenues, the rest of which go to paying the hosting costs.

The weather was fairly tame and the Dolomites are so quiet once you get above the treeline. Nothing but the occasional sound a rockfalls and the gurgle of meltwater.

xigxag (https://xigxag.co.uk/) are a B-Corporation, based in the UK who sell audiobooks.

I've added them to Ethical Book Search so it is easier to buy your audiobooks from a an ethical book seller.

"Thanks so much for the valuable service that you provide."

From an email I got today from someone who uses Ethical Book Search https://www.ethicalbooksearch.com/

It's lovely when people let you know that they like what you have built.

"When trying to understand systems, one really eye-opening and fundamental insight is to realize that the machine is never broken. What I mean by this is, when observing the outcomes of a particular system or institution, it’s very useful to start from the assumption that the outputs or impacts of that system are precisely what it was designed to do."
