So I moved from Gmail to Protonmail, and now I'm moving to a generic IMAP service, so if I have to migrate again, it should be simpler.
OTOH, I told my former partner I wanted to go somewhere where there are other people today, and she said I should, but I guess that's not happening, so I feel like I've let her down again. By not doing something I wanted to do.

I've spent the whole day working on migrating email to another server, and I'm not done yet.

I didn't realize I could be more angry.

California is the most productive agricultural region in the world, but it's prone to frequent droughts, made worse by increasing demand and climate change.
And Trump is ordering the reservoirs emptied for no reason but to demonstrate power.

I mean, use Signal, obviously.
Email just isn't going to be safe.

So I'm looking at alternatives to Protonmail, and what's most often recommended are Tuta.com, less often Mailbox.org, both of which boast of being based in Germany -- which is also veering towards fascism.
So I'm not sure what the fucking point even is anymore.

I should also note that a lot of the people I enjoy interacting with on here are probably in this same demographic and likely have similar feelings.

I'm pausing again to question my life choices, and then I remember I spent about eighteen years of my life trying to find an alternative to this. People were pressuring me to go into computers since I was a child in the eighties. I tried to be an English major in college, but I couldn't handle the workload. I went through years of low wage work and desperation, until finally, I gave up resisting and accepted some help, took some tech classes, and got median wage jobs.
But there's no joy in it.

Years ago, I read about immutable operating systems, and thought using them would massively simplify my job, where we frequently installing and reinstalling Linux.
I've been in several jobs now where I've thought this. I know several Linux distros designed that way. In fact my main employer had an immutable Linux developed in-house.
But I only see immutable systems used by hobbyists who hand-tune everything anyway, not in corporate semi-automated deployments that they're designed for.

Now I'm in a Teams meeting, that was just added to my calendar. All men, middle-aged or older, and about 87% white.
This is my career. This is my demographic. I feel no kinship. I hate it.

The senior tech at my new job talks at length about the office politics behind technical decisions. He works long hours and seems to take it personally when we have to maintain obsolete equipment or there's a delay in deploying new servers.
And I feel some admiration, but also puzzlement. Why care so much about this? We don't talk about what the servers actually do. There's no art being created, no humanitarian mission. It's not even novel technology. It's just a job.

I'm impressed. There's more backbone in the civil service than I expected.

Trump is a dictator. This is not hyperbole. Issuing "executive orders" that overtly exceed his authority is ruling by dictate. He's dictating.

I've been trying to decide where to move my email away from Proton, and I'm kind of wondering whether it's worth the trouble of moving at all, or whether I should just use the much cheaper IMAP service from my DNS provider, since you can't really reliably secure email anyway.

Things are so bad here that I was reassured that the CEO of the company where I work put out a statement that fascism is bad and DEI and inclusivity are good. As in, that's an extraordinary statement in the US right now.

I feel as if dating apps in general are pressuring users to approach each other primarily on the basis of appearance, and I find that very uncomfortable. Then I feel like I'm trying to find something other than a person's appearance in a photo to comment on, and it feels like I'm being disingenuous.

One of the best things about Hinge is that it allows you to decline the fixed options for what kind of dating options you're looking for and what kind of relationship you want, and instead fill in a text field. A lot of people do.
A downside is that there are not a lot of text fields in the profile overall, maybe less than for other apps.
You're expected to write a comment when you "like" a profile, but mostly your likes and comments are attached to photos, which I feel uncomfortable with.
