Toots for Jerry@hear-me.social account

I noticed that pixelfed.social, the #Pixelfed mothership, has a maximum upload file size of 15 MB which I guess makes sense if you host 241K users. The same reason I suppose mastodon.social limits posts to 500 characters. That's a lot of storage!

The benefit of being small is that it isn't a burden to support 12,000 character posts (this Mastodon server) or 98 MB images on a Pixelfed server, along with a higher image quality.

I just raised the maximum image size at https://gr8.pics to 98 MB. I also set the image quality to 100% from the 80% default.

If this matters to you, you're welcome to come on in and join https://gr8.pics!

Swept up by all the excitement over the sudden growth of, and interest in, #Pixelfed, yesterday I opened a publicly accessible Pixelfed server, https://gr8.pics

If you are interested in a new home for posting photos, one that is decentralized and connected to all ActivityPub servers, come on over and kick the tires. It must be good if Zuckerberg is afraid of it, and blocking Pixelfed links, right?

As far as I know, Pixelfed doesn't do server relaying, so photographs and short videos come in only through follow relationships, which is why I'd like to get people to start posting photos and following people elsewhere in the Fediverse who post pictures. Currently, the local and global timelines are limited. Over time, it will become filled with photos and short videos as more people make it their photo home.

Although I haven't tried it yet, it's supposed to import your #Instagram account.

The server is less than a day old. It may have problems I haven't found out about. But, if you're in a pioneering mood and would like a decentralized home for your photos and short videos, well, maybe worth checking this out. The server is small, but seems to be handling what there is effortlessly, but I'll scale it up if I see stress.

Proud to add a Pixelfed server, https://gr8.pics, to my other decentralized servers to support decentralized media:

Mastodon: https://hear-me.social

Peertube: https://my-sunshine.video

Piefed: https://feddit.online

Friendica: https://my-place.social

Phanpy: https://phanpy.hear-me.social

XMPP (Jabber): https://between-us.online

There are many #Friendica fans, and for good reason. Once you get past the learning curve from the difficult UI, you get to appreciate the extra benefits of built-in #Bluesky, #Lemmy/#Piefed/#MBIN, #Tumblr, and #RSS feed integration. It also has #Diasporia integration and some other protocol integrations. Of course, it's also a #Mastodon alternative.

Nobody ever mentions Friendica as being a #Threadiverse app, but it has Groups, which is built-in Threadiverse capability. If you follow a Community on Lemmy/Piefed/MBIN, for example, it gets categorized as a group and is placed into a separate section for the groups you are part of. Then you can read and post in the Group (Community/Magazine) just like you would on a Threadiverse application. You can also create public and private groups.

And there is no need to use a Bluesky bridge if the Friendica instance you are on has the integration turned on.

Here's an excellent 5-minute video showing Friendica created by @earthman

Hey, Fediverse! I'm looking for informed opinions on database choices.

I can stand up an Internet-facing application and have it use either mysql or postgresql. Which is the better choice, and why do you think so?

Thanks!

@CliffWade

Hi Cliff.

We've followed each other for a long time. I'm sad to hear about allthingstech.social shutting down. It hurts to lose one of our own.

You will remain on Mastodon, right?

There are many great instances. All members of your server, are welcome to come here, of course. We have a 12,000-character limit and a poll limit of 10. I have 141 active users.

We do federate with Threads (they are limited). This seems important to say upfront nowadays.

Please stay active.

Who's in?

BTW, anyone using WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger is, well, dude, you're doing it all wrong!

If you must use a centralized messenger application, then at least use Signal.

Even better, choose a decentralized messaging application instead, like Matrix (https://secure-channel.net, for one) or Jabber/XMPP (https://between-us.online, for one).

Dump the centralized, billionaire owned platforms that want to drain everything from you like a cow at the slaughterhouse.

OMG. What a horrible world we live in

  1. The moment you visit a website or app with ad space, it asks a company that runs ad auctions to determine which ads it will display for you. This involves sending information about you and the content you’re viewing to the ad auction company.

  1. The ad auction company packages all the information they can gather about you into a “bid request” and broadcasts it to thousands of potential advertisers.

  1. The bid request may contain personal information like your unique advertising ID, location, IP address, device details, interests, and demographic information. The information in bid requests is called “bidstream data” and can easily be linked to real people.

  1. Advertisers use the personal information in each bid request, along with data profiles they’ve built about you over time, to decide whether to bid on ad space.

  1. Advertisers, and their ad buying platforms, can store the personal data in the bid request regardless of whether or not they bid on ad space.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the kind words!

Going forward, I'm just going to make sure I take the instance down and do a complete image backup of both the server and the database, about 10 minutes of time, before I make any changes. Then, if things go wrong, I can restore the saved images.

I already added the extra drive to the server, so I should be fine in the future.

I don't care what happens to adults who are stupid enough not to protect themselves because they choose to believe nonsense. I feel sorry for the children whose parents don't get them vaccinated, who may have to suffer for it for their entire lives.

I grew up seeing pictures of rooms filled with children who had to live their lives in these iron lungs. I couldn't imagine, as a child, what my life would be like if I had to live the rest of my life in an iron lung. I was horrified by what I saw.

I mean, really? WTAF? #Zuckerberg thinks these bots crapping all over #Facebook and #Meta are good things? I'm sure they'll be on #Threads soon, too.

They will be blocked here if they are set up to Federate.

Hi. I LOVE the rss parrot. It's awesome. Thank you!

Having an issue though with one atom feed: https://blog.prosody.im/index.xml

I get the message that it can't be reached. But, it's reachable, and I'm able to connect and use it from Friendica.

Is there something about this feed that is incompatible with rss-parrot?
