Some connections: Shannon’s MS advisor at MIT was Vannevar Bush (As We May Think). Shannon, in turn, was the PhD advisor of Bert (PARC, Sun, BBN) and Ivan (“father of computer graphics”, Sketchpad, &c) Sutherland. Ivan co-founded and co-ran the the program at Utah that produced Alan Kay (Smalltalk, &c), Jim Clark (3D graphics, SGI, Netscape), John Warnock (postscript, Adobe), Gouraud and Phong (3D graphics/shading pioneers), &c.

One of the most important things we make is the next generation!

“When the citizens and leaders of seemingly stable democracies took that stability for granted, they mostly ignored democracy’s suppurating underbelly: the systematic economic inequalities, the groups that consistently lost out under it, and the many opportunities that it offered to game the system.”

“What I want to discuss with you here is how to solve problems using monads in the Scheme programming language. So a 5-minute introduction is provided that avoids category theory and tries to keep explanations grounded in the realm of practical computer programming.”

And here’s a musical sketch I composed as a tribute to Lynch some years ago, the cover image of which is a photo of Berlin’s Landwehrkanal in winter that I pixel sorted with #clojure code.

“Love is the name in the wind

The wind blows through the trees and stars

We make a wish to be together

This night when we dream together

We'll remember

When we dream together

The big dream”

This mini-documentary about David Lynch making one of my favorite records of recent years is great, and I have seldom felt so utterly in agreement with any statement as this one:

"All the different outlets are important to me, all the different art forms."

Just saw the German premier of Gary Hustvit’s generative remix documentary about Brian Eno last night. It was fantastic. Very much recommended if you get a chance to catch a performance. (I say “performance” because ~70% of it is different every time.)

The generative cinema system was coded by my friend Brendan Dawes, whose other work is also worth your time:

I’ve known several people who tried meditation many times without success until picking up an app like Headspace, so it really pleases me to see that a non-profit in the Netherlands has developed a free and open source meditation app called Medito:

“The level of hype about AI, Machine Learning and Robotics completely distorts people’s understanding of reality. It distorts where VC money goes, always to something that promises impossibly large payoffs […] It distorts what young researchers work on as they do not want to be seen as old fashioned even when the current hyped topic is sort of dumb.”
