@jaz
I've just been consulting your mastodon-near-me map.
Have you been told about these?

The reason that the vinyl record enthusiasts need to post from FediVerse nodes with extraordinarily large character limits for posts is that their every post has to be preceded with at least three lines of hissing and pops and on occasion a very faint echo of the first actual sentence of their post where the tape master had printed through. If I were to say that I yesterday watched a movie about a Chinese family, a launderette, taxes, and a bagel with everything; I suspect that those who hadn't watched the same movie would be perplexed, and those who had would nod in immediate recognition. (-:

If you are the sort of person who filters out politics here, especially politics relating to a particular well-known WWW site and country, then be warned that a 2020 movie named The Hunt is not for you.
I was misled. The EPG billed it as a comedy starring Emma Roberts. Roberts is barely in the film and it is not a comedy in any way. It is a slasher flick with added crap politics relating to those very country and WWW site.
Avoid.
Now I have to wash it away, somehow. Bond, I think.

Two scenes later, there is birdsong on the recreation deck, where Decker and the probe play a game. How oddly realistic — by #StarTrek measure, that is — to have people relaxing to recordings of birdsong!
I remember when playing birdsong and panpipe music was fashionable in certain shops, alongside racks of cassette tapes of them that one could buy, of course.
Relaxing to whalesong had clearly been forgotten in the future, however. (-:

There is a point in #StarTrek: The Motion Picture where they are scanning the probe in sickbay and the scanner reads "opticomm: 10,000 megabits".
Just over 1.16GiB must have seemed huge to movie makers in 1979, enough to store an entire person.
But in 2025 the HD recording of the entire movie uses 3.79GiB according to my TiVo.

Listening to Grace Kelly say "hendbeg" in #AlfredHitchcock's Dial M For Murder, it occurs to me that we do not hear this upper class London "eccent" in #movies and the telly any more — not even in period pieces with the likes of Vanessa Kirby.
Kirby's accent in The Crown was nowhere near as thick as one can hear in many contemporary movies. Kelly in 1954 got a lot closer to the "eccent" that one can hear in (say) contemporary Pathé recordings.

The idea that the Guy Haines character in #AlfredHitchcock's Strangers On A Train is sexually ambiguous seems like total nonsense, from having just watched it. One would have to have an utterly wrongheaded idea of homosexuality — although possible for the very ignorant in the 1950s — to think that it is portrayed or even hinted at here.
Because he wears a tennis blazer? Come off it! The hypothesis is a total reach.

Witness For The Prosecution, at least in 1957 movie form, is clever. There is only one point where Marlene Dietrich's character actually lies. At all other points, she tells the truth, albeit in such a way that other characters are misled. When disguised, for example, she states that the wife wrote the incriminating letters — which she did! She tells the barrister that if she were to give a name, in disguise, it would be a false one — as it would!

@lindasgoluppiart has reminded me that I noticed on New Year's Eve that Stagecoach has started electrificating its local bus fleet.
The ones that I catch connecting the little villages to the nearby towns had been relentlessly diesel. My ride on New Year's Eve was the first electric one that I have seen.
National Express's local fleet, which I catch for some journeys to the nearby big city, has been electric for some years.

Watching Holiday Affair, I am reminded of the peculiarities of 1949 where Hays Code audiences just accepted 22-year-old Janet Leigh as the single (war widowed) mother of a 9-year-old boy and romantic interest for Robert Mitchum or his 35-year-old rival suitor.
Teenage pregnancy was a no-no under the Code, few daring to state it until the late 1950s. Even if we are to believe her to be playing a woman in her middle 20s, there is still a whiff of it here.

So many plot holes and goofs in Raiders, it is ridiculous.
From the dialogue extras cheering on their competitor in English in the Tibetan bar, through the diggers carrying on once the Ark is found, to Indy riding out in pursuit in the Egyptian desert on a horse … right through the middle of the Nazi camp's motor pool.
All good fun, though.

School For Scoundrels has dated as badly as some of the worst Carry On #movies have. It has left such a bad taste that I am going to have to abort the plan for more #AlastairSim and find something completely different.
Hmmm.

Whilst the yellow wind blows outside, I am having old British comedy #movies recorded by the TiVo for 7th night.
The #TitfieldThunderbolt I suspect would have had a very different plot today, thanks to some railway disaster inquiries, and would have irked railway enthusiasts back in the 1950s, too. Just two people pushed that locomotive back uphill at that gradient? Even I can spot that one.
I am not particularly enjoying School For Scoundrels so far.

I appear to have landed on DiCaprio, Irons, Byrne, Malkovich, & Depardieu instead. But this is alright.

Right!
Since I have just been called off from taxi-driver duty – Hurrah! – it is a choice on the TiVo between Indy and Bogie.

Amusing tidbit from #ETTheExtraTerrestrial that I re-watched for the first time in decades yesterday:
Elliott's bedroom has a Hi-Fi set with only a tuner/amplifier and a record player – no cassette player. (The sharp-eyed might like to see if they can make out the manufacturer. Too blurred on my telly.)
Which is probably fair for a 10-year-old in 1982, getting hand-me-down Hi-Fi equipment for bedroom use. But xe would have been pressing hard for a cassette player.

I have not seen the opening of #ET since the 1980s. I have read the novelization more than I have watched the movie. None of it is ringing a bell. This is more interesting than I was expecting for a re-watch. Interesting moment, with decades of hindsight, to see Drew Barrymore so high in the billing right from the outset.
