You can probably see like me, that, the initial build line may not line up with the final roof pieces when I put them on, ie. there will be a gap, which would cause roof instability. (when you are building this high, if you introduce instability, you get less leeway, it goes to red very quick)
It is however a stepping stone to then place the intended pieces later on. (you just put them on top)

5th floor attic sort of thing, just makes it easier to build roof.
You can see the initial build down technique here. (yeah I know it's dark, time does not stop for pretty pictures, it's night, get over it.

So I've figured out how to balance the roof structure so it is even on both sides, because I have fireplaces in opposite corners, therefore the roof must start "one" (effectively the size of said fireplace) in so then you can get a reasonably close center roof line up, sometimes you just have to test to see how things (will) work.

Don't think I'll bother with more stone as it will just interrupt a potential sniper path around the edge of this building, and it may be night, but at least I waited for the strike so you can see.

Stairs done, bow equipped, troll attack, on 4th level, couple of head shots, easy peasy.
Moon rises, no sleep for the tiresome builder, just work work, all day/night, until it's done, slower at night as you can't see as well, so get the hard stuff done during the day, which I just did (the stairs).

The stairs, almost there to 4th, and the internal structures, they are also every level - stable floor, and on 4th that will mean (once I stone case a few pillars), stable roof.

The methods of stabilization, almost green, not too shabby, those pillars go right down, I think there is still some yellow so I may have to add more to bring it back, the stairs probably needs more work, and have not gone up to fourth yet, another time, used up a lot of stone, bit tired to do any more.
Though it may seem like I spend a lot of time in game, there is also a lot on pause, with me figuring out what I want to do, the actual time of me playing is far less.
That is why solo is for me, I can have breaks, and it is necessary for me too, I'm on a different time-scale to most people, and that's okay, I'm always just trying to pace myself.

Yeah yellow is a form of green right, I think that's the best I will get,
Even the main structure walls are yellow, that tells me I have limited space to build upwards.
I did give iron wood (I thought it was iron pine - that would have worked) a go, completely & utterly useless, even at low levels, I would place a build item, already red, weak as.

Been tough going trying to get some stability as I build to fourth level, if it's not all green then you have problems, I'm getting there, just very slow, destruct, fix, rebuild, repeat, I don't think I will try for five levels, four is enough, and with stairs outside main structure and no real need to have much else in the building should be plenty of space, the old portal building basically would fit in 1/4 of this one to give you some idea of the size of it.

Spiral stairs.
Stabilization from walls (both sides) - check.
Stabilization from pine - check.
Stabilization from internal solid structure - check .
Looking good so far.
(yes this is the portal building)

Filling in an older dock area for more space, was only useful for small ships anyway, I'll make a better setup later on.
More space the better, then I can build to my hearts desire whatever I need to make this truly worthy of the main home I wish it to be, instead of the ramshackle setup I made very early on, sure it did the job of getting me here, but now - now I am seasoned.

So far I have not used iron-reinforced wood for my structures but for this one, I just might because I want as much space as possible, and that means HUGE!

So how do people create these massive structures with stairs that seem to reach up into the sky, and they are stable, so I've been thinking about it, and from what I saw, they used a method of stairs gaining stability from walls, so the highest you can go would be the outer-most stairs working your way inwards as you go lower, so effectively they are always stone underneath them.
It's an interesting method, and as I'm currently setting up for my next build - the portal building, one I plan to use.

On 2nd floor internally so you can see the method, I'll learn you non- actual (in real life) builders, if it's one of the last things I do, and it could just very well might be.

Stone floored snipe balcony, note the staged expansion over two 2m vertical intervals using 4x2 stone with a pine interior for initial structure.
