I think you've pinpointed the issue - the new building regulations will only remove gas boilers as a choice in new homes - probably. And they are also weakening the proposals for all new properties to have solar panels.

And It's unclear when we're finally going to get these new regulations. Originally I recall they were due to come into force in 2016 but were abandoned when the Tory Government was elected in 2015.

But what seems to be the case is that they have dropped the proposal to stop selling of gas boilers to replace those in existing properties like yours, that are going to wear out from 2035.

A gas boiler is good for 10-15 years so if we keep putting new ones in after 2035 then there will still be plenty of them burning gas in 2050.

Similar problem to them dithering about when to stop making ICE and full-hybrid cars.

And net zero 2050 is probably too late anyway: I just mention it because they are going to have to come up with their policy proposals to meet their self-imposed Carbon Budget and 2050 net zero targets in the next few months.

BTW Best wishes for your heat pump install and hopefully the gas boiler will last long enough. My own house is badly suited to either heat pumps or EVs as its a big house with single pipe radiator heating and we are far from the road and only connected by a 13mm mains electricity cable that we share with our neighbour that would need to be replaced with something much beefier.

I'll be interested to know how we are supposed to get to net zero by 2050 if this article is correct and we have abandoned plans to get rid of gas boilers.

I suppose this government has just given up on the idea of a sustainable future.

‘Future homes standard’ will not mandate replacing boilers with environmentally friendly alternative".

interesting study of the short tem impact of permafrost melting.

Some concern that it only talks about carbon release.

Most of the emissions from decaying, now unfrozen, vegetation will be methane which has a GWP of 81 over 20 years, 28 over 100 years compared to carbon dioxide.

The UKHSA makes the decision as to eligibility and who gets what vaccine.

They generally follow the advice from the JCVI (the same people who underestimate the value of the Covid Vaccines).

For this Winter advice was given in Sept 2023:

https://www.selondonics.org/wp-content/uploads/JCVI-Statement-on-Influenza-Vaccines-2024-25.pdf

And this is now their advice for 2025-26:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/flu-vaccines-2025-to-2026-jcvi-advice/jcvi-statement-on-influenza-vaccines-for-2025-to-2026

There seems to be lots of consideration of which vaccine to give to which group but no research into whether we are targeting everyone who could benefit.

"Starmer to meet Saudi crown prince in push for infrastructure cash"

Oh, for goodness sake the man is a total dipshit.

If investment in our infrastructure will pay off then lets do it ourselves, not get ourselves even more in hock to some rich Middle Eastern petrostates. Remember we are still paying through the nose for PFI.

Just got a Govt alert on my phone to warn us about the wind down here in Devon.

Loud repeating klaxon noise and a page full of words. I click on the OK button to stop the noise and the words all disappear before H can read them.

I think their UI could do with some work.

"KFC drops pledge to stop using ‘Frankenchickens’ in the UK".

"KFC won plaudits in 2019 when it announced it was signing up to the Better Chicken Commitment but now says it will not meet the pledge. Its 2024 annual progress report on chicken welfare reported that just 1% of its chickens were from slower-growing breeds.

The firm’s ambition was to meet six key targets by 2026, including adoption of slower-growing breeds and a maximum stocking density of 30kg a square metre or less, which gives the birds significantly more space."

What a surprise. 5 years and just 1%. That's real commitment.

I thought the future was free-range?

As well as pollution from our failing water companies our rivers and fields are full of animal effluents from industrial scale farming. And they are still building more.

Despite large poultry units being a key driver of river pollution, their number has soared near the Wye and Severn"

"A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones"

Well us Brits have always been amazed at how white and pearly American teeth are but dentistry is the US has clearly gone down the same oligopolistic and #enshittification rabbithole that the rest of American medicine has - as already documented by #pluralistic.

"Many dental clinics that offer implants have consolidated into chains owned by private equity firms that have bought out much of implant dentistry. In health care, private equity investment is sometimes criticized for overtreatment and prioritizing short-term profit over patients."

In the UK dentistry is increasingly privatised and our new Health Minister has been well bribed by the (often American) health companies to move even more of our health care to private sector contractors who will obviously take their cut. This will not end well.

Got an email from the Labour Party at 6:42 this evening:

"It’s all systems go here in HQ, Marjolica, so I’ll cut to the chase:

Will you chip in just £1 to get us over our £1 million goal? We’re so close, and if enough people make their first general election contribution tonight, we’ll get there — and keep our campaign funded right until polls close tomorrow at 10pm."

Do they really need more money now?

And from me?

NB I resigned from the Labour Party in May.

This is not just about banning rainbow lanyards in the civil service.

McVey is also going to abolish all the diversity networks (LGBT, Trans, Muslim, Black). Typically the networks have one paid employee, so not expensive.

I see that the Muslim Network has already been suspended for lobbying for a Gaza ceasefire.

As a former CSRA committee member I still recall when we had a Labour govt. we worked with on DEI initiatives. What are chances the Starmer will reverse this?

This is the first time I've tried to grapple with Neuhaus' DICE model.

Is it as aggregated and feedback free as the descriptions I'm reading imply?

Energy and Labour (population) are exogenous?

Aggregate Energy use is the only driver of Global warming? What about agriculture/food (energy + Methane)?

What about renewables?

Uses aggregate GDP when this includes the cost of harms?
