Therefore, music can be created in a way that can lead your perception unconsciously, when a kick drum is removed for example you may pay more attention to the other elements of the mix, as to when you introduce it again, which could lead to an increase of favourable body movement than previously. Lots of different tools to create a subconscious process that can be molded and shaped by taking advantage of this non-linearity.

Or how low end tends to be perceivably louder than higher frequencies, which could be used as a musical tool to lead your attention to different places in the mix.

My own words: Exploring the non-linearity between musical events and perception could be a valid exploration of music. After all we are all different, and what I perceive sonically could be completely different to someone else, therefore deepening the wide potential of effects that music can have on individuals. An example could be how DJ mixes can blend tracks in a way that adds rhythmic nuance to its pulse, sometimes accentuating the upbeat instead of the downbeat.

This week: Non-Linear Perception on page 9.
Most human sensory perception is non-linear. A
physiological response such as hearing or sight is
not directly proportional to the stimulus ( sound or
light) causing that response. Non-linearity means that
equal changes in some stimulus (vibration rate,
intensity, etc.) do not result in equal changes in
perception. ( pitch, loudness, etc.).

To quote a line from the book to spur discussion;
Try everything! Never wonder "should I do this?". Instead an attitude of "I wonder what will happen when I do this?" may lead to an expansion or development of a unique technique. A designer may manufacture a device to satisfy a specific musical need, and an innovative musician may discover that the device suits many other needs which never entered the mind of the designer.

Starting a weekly series of electronic music and audio engineering related discussions via this platform based on Allen Strange’s book “ Electronic music”. Whenever you open this app or stumble upon something on your timeline hopefully you can absorb a tiny meteorite chunk of knowledge and even join in on some of the fun. Today’s topic is parametric design, the science behind the interaction of the numbers and controls that produce sound and different ways to wire them. Thanks Kel for the idea.
