Well, #NodeBB is now up and running. Still need to do a lot of setup, but it seems to be working! A detailed account of my philosophical and technical struggles will follow in a few days.
@nodebb what a day to deploy! I got 4.0 simply because I got too tired to keep going last night...

What should I learn (and write) about deploying next? Poll showing my favorite options, but I'm open to other ideas.
I wouldn't say no to boosts 🙂

My second blog post is done! I worked very hard at it.
[#]Monitoring #Caddy with #FluentBit and #Prometheus
After deploying this website, as I described in my previous post, I was confronted with the question of what to do next. I have a list of potential next steps at the end of the post, but as I was working through them, one thing stood out. A lot of those next steps have to do with performance, and planning for the future where there might be greater loads on the system. Also, each next step adds complexity to the stack.
The most important tool for planning, understanding the impact of changes, and for dealing with the consequence of complexity (← bugs) is the ability to understand and measure what is actually happening. Therefore, what we need is to install some monitoring, so that we can see issues and make plans based on actual data.

I could probably just run the json exporter in a separate container, but then I would have to learn #Go to make it read the logs over the network

I'm having to learn how to write OpenRC service files for a blog post and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Ok it's not really for a blog post, it's just that I want to export #Caddy logs to #Prometheus and still run it all in an #AlpineLinux image based container.
I'm not even an ops guy

I finally published my first technical blog post ever! It's about how I self-hosted my new blog using #Ghost, #Caddy, and #Docker. I'd love to hear any feedback you have.

Ok, I get the idea...
(Also, the host's support team told me that trying to set up a private network would be basically wasting my time)
So what's the best way to run everything in #containers? #Docker+#Nginx Reverse Proxy? Some kind of dark magic with #Kubernetes? Something else?

Hi so this is kind of an opinion question. I am setting up some apps on a VPS provider and trying to figure out what is the best way to architect it. My specialization is in dev not ops, so I'm stuck on how to set it up.
Here's my use case:
So, what should I do? I'd appreciate comments and explanations.
Please boost

It would be so great to be able to have a SSG site as Fediverse frontend, for the limited use case of displaying only content by the site author(s). Maybe even with a simple client built in for user comments. You could connect your regular account on a Mastodon API compatible instance with OAuth, or get an ad-hoc account from the site just for commenting there. It would not be so hard to implement, just a lot of time that I don't have.

Every few months I get back to this, get stuck, and start fantasizing about implementing my own backend, but I know that unless someone wants to pay me for it it's not going to happen because I absolutely can't do this much unpaid work if I want to stay married

I'm working on connecting the #11ty blog I share with my wife to the Fedi. I'd prefer to use #BridgyFed, but unfortunately it doesn't support multiple users on one domain, and #GoToSocial has some sort of bug that breaks the auth flow with #Bridgy. So I'm pretty stuck.
I wish things were not this difficult. I would like to have syndication and comments backed by the Fediverse but I didn't want to use #Wordpress even before the latest mishegos...

It's getting really ridiculous—not only does it say Sr. Engineer in my company profile, but two teams are actually stealing me from one another. So why can't I afford both rent and utilities in a modest Minnesota suburb?! I even gave up having a car to save money!

Two wipeouts in two days. I don't get to ride my #bike until I put some new tires on...
I never needed studded tires before, just some 80PSI knobbly hybrid road tires should be fine, right? I never go very far...
But boy are the roads slippery. We've been getting a lot of freezing rain type stuff so far this week

I'm working on fixing up my old blog and everything, but for some reason, even though I've been known to make long, unsolicited threads here about subjects, I just can't look at that rich text editor without figuratively running away.
I think that it's the difference in unconscious expectations between a casual social media rant and a well written, thoughtful essay
