After deploying this website, as I described in my previous post, I was confronted with the question of what to do next. I have a list of potential next steps at the end of the post, but as I was working through them, one thing stood out. A lot of those next steps have to do with performance, and planning for the future where there might be greater loads on the system. Also, each next step adds complexity to the stack.

The most important tool for planning, understanding the impact of changes, and for dealing with the consequence of complexity (← bugs) is the ability to understand and measure what is actually happening. Therefore, what we need is to install some monitoring, so that we can see issues and make plans based on actual data.

I'm having to learn how to write OpenRC service files for a blog post and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Ok it's not really for a blog post, it's just that I want to export #Caddy logs to #Prometheus and still run it all in an #AlpineLinux image based container.

(Also, the host's support team told me that trying to set up a private network would be basically wasting my time)

So what's the best way to run everything in #containers? #Docker+#Nginx Reverse Proxy? Some kind of dark magic with #Kubernetes? Something else?

Hi so this is kind of an opinion question. I am setting up some apps on a VPS provider and trying to figure out what is the best way to architect it. My specialization is in dev not ops, so I'm stuck on how to set it up.

Here's my use case:

1. For now it'll be at least 3 #Ghost blogs, I might add other things later, like a Fedi instance or #forgejo, or maybe some other kinds of applications.

2. I am not expecting huge amounts of traffic, but it's good to know one's services are resilient. I think that there's a greater risk of becoming a target of ddos or some other attack from people who hate me, than very popular with readers and users...

3. I'm using a VPS host that charges by fine grained use of resources, so there is basically no cost per server, only the overhead that server generates from running the OS and so on. I've done this in shared hosting with https://nearlyfreespeech.net but https://slicie.com offers VPS. I'm on a 60-day trial so I get to see how that works out.

4. I want to build something resilient, learn cool and useful things, get into aelf-hosting, and mitigate my tendency to over-engineer things...

So, what should I do? I'd appreciate comments and explanations.

It would be so great to be able to have a SSG site as Fediverse frontend, for the limited use case of displaying only content by the site author(s). Maybe even with a simple client built in for user comments. You could connect your regular account on a Mastodon API compatible instance with OAuth, or get an ad-hoc account from the site just for commenting there. It would not be so hard to implement, just a lot of time that I don't have.

I'm working on connecting the #11ty blog I share with my wife to the Fedi. I'd prefer to use #BridgyFed, but unfortunately it doesn't support multiple users on one domain, and #GoToSocial has some sort of bug that breaks the auth flow with #Bridgy. So I'm pretty stuck.

I wish things were not this difficult. I would like to have syndication and comments backed by the Fediverse but I didn't want to use #Wordpress even before the latest mishegos...

It's getting really ridiculous—not only does it say Sr. Engineer in my company profile, but two teams are actually stealing me from one another. So why can't I afford both rent and utilities in a modest Minnesota suburb?! I even gave up having a car to save money!
