[#]SanDiegoZoo totally wins the #RoseParade. The red pandas, tiger with a twitching tail, and pandas eating real bamboo. Spectacular ginger, anthuriums, and of course roses. More than 3500 different species on the float?!

Truly spectacular!

First pic in this #LATimes story shows how they captured the expression of the zoo’s most engaging tiger resident:

On the one hand, this idea is brilliant.

On the other hand, my cats don't mind dogs, and the vet is one of the few places I get to pet them.

Why do so many people like the boring, non-radioactive minerals?

Where is your sense of adventure? Your love of creation (of new nuclides)? Your 20th century nostalgia?

[#]Celestine has strontium! I love a good radionuclide.

The radiolarian Acantharea ( https://photosymbiosis.com/about-the-acantharia/) which unlike other silica-shelled radiolarians, chose to make a Celestine skeleton, clearly knows something. Most plankton skeletons are silica or #calcite, but the discerning Protozoa knows strontium sulfate is ever so much more stylish.

The best predictor for when an earthquake will occur is whether another earthquake just happened. However, the change in probability is still pretty small (I remember a 5-10% increase in likelihood based on global statistics, which isn't a lot.)

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9q

Japan is in the rare situation of having a large quake with an epicenter right near one of the thrust faults that can produce mega-quakes. If the megathrust is near failure, the quake that just happened might have pushed it to a critical state. We only know enough about this area to forecast an increased risk because the subduction zones around Japan are the most-studied faults in the world.

Olympic surfing is in Tahiti because

  1. Paris doesn’t have a lot of waves (or even a beach).

  1. The coast of France is not known for its big wave conditions (except during storms when surfing is a bad idea).

  1. Tahiti is an overseas county of the French Republic.

  1. Teahupo’o in particular has waves that are remarkably consistent in their surfability.

I'd still rather vote for the old man that has a conscience than the guy energetically lying about 80% of his talking points.

And if you think he isn't lying because he believes what he says, then you're admitting he is a delusional narcicist who has lost complete touch with reality.

As a scientist, I cannot handle an absolute disregard of demonstrable facts. It flies in the face of the 2000+ years of human progress since Aristotle and Co.

Tired of choosing between two candidates you dislike?

Feel like your vote doesn't matter?

Unsure what most of those other races on the ballot actually affect?

The solution is to vote in every single primary, caucus, and local election you can.

Whoever decided to schedule a huge international conference less than 2 weeks before Christmas and therefore also during finals for the vast majority of academics was an idiot.

Whoever decided we should all keep doing this year after year after year was absolutely insane.

In other news, I have a passable poster presentation draft, but have not written the lecture for my last astronomy class tomorrow. Nor have I written the exam my students will take on Wednesday while I am in San Francisco being overwhelmed by all the Geophysics talks in the world. Nor do I actually know how my poster is getting printed or how I am physically getting to the Penninsula without my car.

Covid shot and flu shot in opposite arms. Feeling a bit ughy.

Still, it’s nice to be up to date on all my relevant vaccines. Interacting with lots of college kids, 7 yr olds, and everyone else under the sun means I get all the germs. But in the past 3 yrs I’ve been sick less than any previous time in my life. Even ignoring Covid (which I seem to have had once, in 2020), avoiding crowded spaces, convincing sick students to stay home, flu vaccines, and some strategic masking have served me very well.
