For years UK politicians have outsourced our data. Various government departments were forced to put their IT out to tender. A lot of the databases went to global IT companies.
Recently, US companies gained control of chunks of our NHS along with a lot of confidential health data.
Does anyone think that is safe this week?
It the UK doing anything to protect confidential government, company, and individual data held by others?

I currently use gmail but want to move.
I've not kept up with developments since I retired and a combination of post covid and fibro fog can make absorbing large amounts of new information too much.
I have a windows laptop, and an android tablet and an android phone.
I did try migrating to linux a while ago but failed.
What are the (simple) mail options?

Yet another folk event upstairs in a pub.
And all the local open mic nights I want to attend are all upstairs too.
Very few people think this might be an issue.

Ikea's grow room plans are open source.
I'd love to have this but my tiny patio garden is too small.

[#]WordWeavers How honest is your MC when honesty will get them into trouble?
My MC in the steamship book hates to lie, but has to evade detection. She avoids answering when possible.

Do you write or imagine a backstory for your secondary characters, or do they pop into existence as required?
They may pop up in the first draft if they are very minor characters. Sometimes I think I know them immediately but one character in the book in first edit stage now didn't even get a name. I've flagged his appearances to add a bit of context.
I have a file with character names and relationships but he is just listed as 'groom' at the moment.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub #Writing 05 January can be a dull month (especially in the UK). What's your worst writing month, and why?
November.
It used to be the month to do nano, replaced by #WritingMonth in 2024. But November is now one of my busiest months, as I do a series of talks in schools from late Oct to end November.
I don't count the words in my talks ...

Started making 3kg of organic Sevilles into marmalade. I selected 1/3 with the best skins for my home help to peel, she shredded the peel and juiced them.
I no longer have a huge jam-making pan so I've put 1/2 of what is left in the slow cooker to extract the flavour. The rest to be cooked later. On Monday HH will scrape out the contents of the intact oranges, to be boiled down in the flavoured water. That will be strained, added to the shreds + juice and boiled.
I use erythritol to sweeten.

[#]WordWeavers 31Dec—Do your characters celebrate any form of a year ending and a new one beginning
In the novel currently in first edit stage my main character and family celebrate Naw Ruz, new year, at the vernal equinox, following their fast month.

[#]writerscoffeeclub 28/12/2024 Have any resources improved your storytelling skills?
The spell checker on a PC. I told stories for many years but dyslexia stopped me from trying to write them down.
Struggling to spell words slowed down the flow of any story until it disappeared. I had too many 'Kubla Khan' moments.
I still find it easier to tell stories aloud rather than capture them on paper or a screen.

Reading posts about misunderstandings about farmers, ie income vs the 'value' of land, reminds me why I try to spend any extra money on groups like Riverford, Crowdfarming, etc. where the farmers get a decent price for the food they produce instead of donating my money to CEOs and shareholders of large supermarket chains who drive prices to the actual producers down.
Yes owners of mega farms make money but too many farmers exist due to bank loans and other debt.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 21 December: Disney is making a musical animation of one of your stories. How well does that go?

Does charity exist in your world and do any characters participate in it or support it?
The main extended family don't think of anything they do as charity, it is just the way people live together in a society that believes we are all humans. They share.

Just seen a long post done all in caps. This isn't about whether all caps equals shouting, it is a problem because dyslexics like me can't read it.
I recognise the shapes of words. Using a capital letter at the start of a word is fine. All caps takes me too long to interpret.

I've not been posting so much about the author/editor errors in historical novels recently.
Because I found another place to post.
But a pre Georgian period heroine, I think it is set in the 15thC, who longs for coin to buy buns, fruit and a turkey leg for dinner in England!
