What is it with people turning blindly left from side roads in their cars? Last month, I was nearly struck by left-turners while on foot on three different crosswalks. Today, on a road that was empty except for me, going 28mph in a 30mph zone, a woman turned left just as I came abreast of the road she turned out of; she would have hit me if I hadn’t immediately leaned on the horn to alert her 😧😦 She hadn’t seen me. Blind spot from big side pillar? Cognitive impairment from #Covid? Scary as hell.

Anyone complaining about the UK’s national health service not having adequate funding should be aware that privatization is no answer at all, and in fact can lead to asset stripping and public entities left holding destroyed facilities and massively reduced workforce. A horrifying example in this long and detailed article about a set of US hospitals: https://prospect.org/health/2024-12-09-ambulance-chasers-totaled-hospitals/

Three times in the last month, I have been nearly run over while on a marked pedestrian crosswalk. Each time:
Heartstopping 😵💫

Listened to a BBC Radio4 program on “is the internet getting worse?” (Tl;dr: yes)
Featured an interesting interview with Cory Doctorow, and for once (not guaranteed with the BBC), a decent number of non-male interviewees.
Didn’t learn much, as have already read a lot on this subject, but glad that monopoly control, surveillance capitalism and enshittification are being discussed in a channel that many people tune into.
No obvious mention of the #Fediverse, though 😒.

Argh, there’s a woman in South Africa who thinks her email address is my email address. Department stores, financial institutions, and now taxi firms are sending “her” stuff. It amazes me: doesn’t she wonder why she’s not getting expected emails about all these things? I did contact her bank to tell them they had the wrong email address, and those emails ceased, but that doesn’t seem to have made an impression on her as she is clearly still handing out my address, as she has been for some years!

Rebuilt a Corsi-Rosenthal box today, as the filters in my previous iteration were well over a year old, so probably ~4000hr of use*. I run it nightly, in the bedroom, and during the day when we’re trying to get things out of the air, e.g. when outside air pollution is high, or when we have a tradesperson doing work in the house. The filters weren’t ultra grimy, but I had time, and managed to find MERV-13 filters at the local hardware store recently.

Just finished “The Light Pilot” by Lily Brooks-Dalton. Set in a near-future Florida beset by hurricanes and crumbling infrastructure. Beautifully written and ultimately hopeful, but hard to read at times because the situation and events are so wrenching. One v peculiar plot device that I wish wasn’t included because it induces skepticism that could bleed over into being skeptical of the rest — which is actually frighteningly plausible. Anyway, recommended.

After nearly 20 years living on a different continent I still sometimes get culture shock.
Today, it was from seeing an intentional community described as “45 minutes from [city]”. The clear assumption is that everyone will be traveling by car (at a similar speed), and as time is what matters to people it’s important to emphasize this, and not the actual distance.

Like many pathogens, SARS-CoV2 is transmitted mostly via aerosol. Yet the medical establishment has been incredibly slow to acknowledge #CovidIsAirborne, and instead promotes hand washing. Why?
This is yet another instance of powerful interests focusing on cheap individual action over more expensive systemic change (e.g. better ventilation/filtration in buildings). Get #Covid? Your fault, you didn’t wash your hands well enough. (Environment degrading? Your fault, you didn’t recycle well enough)

@Lorrrraaaaine You have a Microclimate Air 2? I only came across them after they had sold out. Their website has been saying for ages that the Air 3 is coming in summer or fall 2023, but fall is now half over and there’s no change… so I do wonder if they are going out of business, like #Airgami masks.
