If you run a US university research lab please reach out to your folks today to explain any impacts the OMB grant pause memo will have on them, both short-term (will they get paid next week) and medium-term. Communication with your folks is important even if you're still figuring out the details.
Imagine if you're a graduate student who knows they are funded on a federal grant, but doesn't understand the distinction between disbursed and undisbursed funds. You might reasonably think you won't get paid next week even if there is a year or more of your support in a university account already.

""the Trump administration is claiming the unilateral power to at least temporarily “impound” tens of billions of dollars of appropriated funds—in direct conflict with Congress’s constitutional power of the purse, and in even more flagrant violation of the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 (ICA)"

One of the things I always get out of watching @powersoffour stream is a sense of faculty co-working that can be a more difficult to come by the more senior you get. I think that the kinds of communities that streaming have built in other areas can translate well to academic spaces.

“But there's still no fire exits on Bluesky. The exits are on the blueprints, they're roughed into the walls, but no one's installed them. Bluesky users' only defense against a dumpster fire is the ongoing goodwill and wisdom of Bluesky management. That's not enough.” - @pluralistic

As it stands every year I have to manually re-add software products, lesson material, and websites. They are often tucked under "other product" and it's just a text box. No DOI's, no metadata, just a text box. In contrast papers (& now datasets) have rich metadata and DOIs and persist across reports.

Dear US NSF - demonstrating your commitment to valuing all research products (not just papers) requires reporting that treats all products equally. Formally adding datasets was a great start (thanks!), but now we need software and other products to be part of the Public Access Repository.

Collaboratively developed open educational resources can improve the quality of education while reducing the total time spent on lesson development.
If you're interested in how to do this, @thecarpentries just released version 1.0 of their Collaborative Lesson Development Training.

To partly answer my own question this looks like a pretty extensive and well curated list of postbac opportunities in ecology:

I'm looking for postbac opportunities in ecology/wildlife for someone looking to improve their research experience for grad school applications. If there are good compilations I'd love to be pointed to them, but also interested in individual programs if folks are aware of them. Thanks!

For the last year @skmorgane has been blogging about a potential major reorganization (i.e., regime shift) of the small mammals at her nearly 50 year long-term study. The latest post is out and well worth a read as an exemplar of qualitative + quantitative approaches to ecological prediction and opening up the scientific process beyond just the end results.
