Hey again, Fediverse scientists! Are you a science sleuth or do you happen to know one? I would need a bit of help to investigate some dubious journals.

I'm looking forward to have an expert opinion. If you want to contribute please write a private message to me! Thanks in advance 😄😄

Another day I'm a happy #Julia user. It turns out that it is very easy to extract the hue of any color and create a colormap from lighter to darker versions of it via Colors.jl. Perfect to get color shades and a nice color code through my papers :)

It is also possible to modify parameters such as the saturation, brightness or contrast of the colormap.

Hi, scientists from the Fediverse! It seems that Nature is asking people about Twitter migration and if they are happier on #bluesky .

On Nature writers' minds, Bluesky is the only place to migrate to. There's not a single mention of the Fediverse in there! However, there is a small free text box where you can write your thoughts, in the step before "send" button. So I did fill the poll anyway, writing why I decided not to go to Bluesky but to Mastodon instead.

I thought that maybe if we get enough people to actually fill the survey and mention that they migrated to Mastodon, we can make a stronger case for open, free networks. It's an extremely short survey, so let's try! https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00037-y

Para los científicos españoles: ¡la ANECA tiene desde ahora una cuenta aquí también! @aneca

Muchas gracias por dar el salto y apostar por las redes libres :)

For all the scientists out there: do you write science threads for general audiences? If so, which hashtags do you use?

I would like to start compiling options, especially to have hashtags for different languages. The idea would be to start getting consensus on common hashtags so people interested in science can follow the tag and read cool things in their preferred language.

If you know any hashtag or if you have suggestions, write a comment! :) #science #scicomm

We have a new preprint on the emergence of orientation selectivity in layers 2/3 and 4 of the mouse. We use data from the Allen Institute's Microns project, which includes structure plus function of thousands of neurons, to constrain network models that account for the observations and hint some key features on the origin of tuning in L2/3. For any feedback, do not hesitate to contact us!

I have just been invited by a known journal to review a paper about clinical trials on cancer.

My background is theoretical physics. I work on applications to neuroscience. I have never published anything remotely related to cancer. Why in the world would I get this invitation to review? It does frankly speak very bad of the journal.

The experience of publishing in Plos Comp Bio is probably one of the worst out there. What can I say. Disappointed at every possible level (and there are many layers).

The article in Science, with all the details in English: https://www.science.org/content/article/spanish-university-head-accused-inflating-citations-his-own-work Notice that the retractions were announced yesterday so this is not yet covered. However, it was 75 conference papers with manipulated citations to increase the author's bibliometrics artificially. Largest scandal in Spanish science system so far. (and we got some of them already...)

Head of the University of Salamanca, Spain, gets 75 (!!!) papers retracted for manipulating citations. The practice was uncovered last year, before he was elected head of the uni.

Still, he got the position.

After several external reports confirming the practices, two articles in Science denouncing the case, and the retractions by Springer, he still holds the position. Latest news (in Spanish for now) https://elpais.com/ciencia/2024-10-16/la-editorial-springer-nature-retira-75-estudios-del-rector-de-salamanca-y-sus-colaboradores-por-practicas-fraudulentas.html

[#]Arxiv is still down, for the 3rd day in a row. This starts to be really annoying. According to their status page is because high demand.... Let's see what happens.

On the meantime, my uni is not subscribed to a lot of the journals I need to read, so basically I cannot read any paper if it's not in Scihub.

I wrote a long post explaining how I do format my figures for publications, posters and so on., on how to ensure everything looks nice on the paper (or the screen). With tips both for #matplotlib and #makie! Most probably I will have to polish the writing a bit, but here it is, enjoy! https://victorseven.github.io/2024/09/making-graphs #dataviz #julialang #python

Boosting again my first solo-author paper because (i) I just submitted to the journal and (ii) maybe a lot of people were on holidays when I first posted the thread.

Waiting with the finished preprint just to send it was difficult, but it is was simply not worth to do this in July/August.

Only thing I am missing are some accounts to jump here. The preprint bots I'm following are mostly Twitter bot mirrors, so they work a bit meh. Also a lot of journals (especially the APS physics ones) are not here. Looking forward also to start following news agencies and so on to make some lists, hopefully people will start taking the fedi more seriously with time.

Also I changed again my client to https://phanpy.social, which is more minimalistic and has a 'catch-up' feature that shows me all latests post in a timeframe, and I can filter to discard reposts or just click on the people I am more interested in. Really cool feature...

I put all the preprint announcement bots I am interested in inside a list and now Mastodon serves as a really nice newsletter. Also, it is possible to tell Mastodon to not show the list's content in your timeline, so my main view won't be flooded when the bots update :)

Back from the summer! My vacations were something like:

It's nice to disconnect for a bit, just even working a bit less and with another approach is good. Now I am all-in to continue! #academiclife
