This is a serious question: How do I get the ACM Digital Library to correct my name in a cited OOPSLA '97 Conference Panel Session?

The link to the report is at https://dl.acm.org/action/doSearch?AllField=OOPSLA+%2797+Derek+Coleman

And the citation (not in the report itself) is listed as Article

Free

October 1997

Published By ACM

UML (panel): the language of blueprints for software?

Derek Coleman,Viktor Ohnjec, John Artim,Erick Rivas,Jim Rumbaugh,Rebecca Wirfs-Bracle

Good grief. I am a lifetime ACM member. Rebecca Wirfs-Bracle is not.

I'm going to put the report online on my website (with typo corrections fixed in the report) for a historical record. But would like to fix the author name in the ACM's repositories...

I spent about 3 hours on the phone 4 different times to "resolve" this issue.

I cannot give up because I need access to this insurance.

They cannot delete the account, with the misspelled name. They cannot alter the name associated with the email account....

All they can do (and this is what the supervisor told them) is to escalate it to IT (who will probably tell me to use another email account to create an account).

So... the trick I have to do is to create an email alias that forwards to my email address...because when I get alerts or two factor authorization requests, they need to come to my email so I see them (not to another person's account). Sigh.

This is seriously unfriendly.

I don't know how people who know nothing about computers or email handle situations like this.

I am on round #4 with customer service trying to correct a problem with my name ... finally, I reached someone who can see what my problem is, but is now talking to their supervisor. Long story short (there is a hyphen in my last name in a field that I cannot change)... which prevents me from creating an online medical account... and now they are in the process of deleting my bogus account so to create a new one. Fingers crossed. Social Security (and consequently this insurance provider) doesn't recognize hyphens, so my name is Wirfs Brock not Wirfs-Brock.

So the solution is... ta da, I need to create a new account with a different email address.

Today's word from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows:galagog--the state of being simultaneously entranced and unsettled by the vastness of the cosmos, which makes your deepest concerns feel laughably quaint, yet vanishingly rare.

From galaxy + agog (awestruck)

And yet, my thoughts are with the many people in LA County facing fires and devastation.

There have been days (yes, weeks even) where we've had very smokey skies. But I cannot imagine raging winds and fire danger. It is frightening.

and, ok... one more phrase before I go outside and step away from my computer for a few hours:

watashiato: curiosity about the impact you've had on the people you know, wondering which of your harmless actions or long-forgotten words might've altered the plot of their stories in ways you'll never see.

Fr: Japanese: watash (I)+ashiato (footprint)

OK... time to introduce some defiinitions from John Koenig's, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. Just randomly picked up this book and it immediately brought me joy...

published in 2021, it is a compendium of new words for emotions (yep, they are made up, but based on root meanings and interesting phrase combinations). Highly recommend this book.

Today's emotion: "fool's guilt": A pulse of shame you feel even though you've done nothing wrong--like passing a police car while driving below the speed limit, or leaving a store without making a purchase.

Or taking a nap midday (or taking a break from your computer), for that matter.

Just knowing a name for this feeling is precious.

NYTimes reflection on the Y2K problem...

I spent time working at a Telcom as a consultant at that time, and yes, we spent several months converting data to new sw systems that could handle the billing aspects appropriately. This was not lace making (we didn't correct old code) but data conversion (maybe another form of yak shaving) and it took a lot of effort.
