Trying hard not to pay attention to national news today. Our kids bike parade will instead do a neighborhood cleanup. Bags, gloves, trash pickers, trailer, pizza at the end. Am I forgetting anything?

And the last question is from @pete:
Q8. How does your approach to long, or indeed any distance rides differ, and why?
(There's no wrong answer of course, but why do we do things the way we do?)

I found out from @meganL that the entire old Austin B-Cycle bikeshare fleet is for auction. The current bid is $20k USD for 260 e-bikes, 995 docks, and lots of other spare parts, with ~2 days left.
Q7. What would you do with this fleet if you had it? Could any local entities practically put this to good use? Do you have any crazy but good ideas for what can be done with this fleet?

@SRLevine I tried converting an old Burley to a useful cargo trailer (I think @ai6yr has one?) but broke it when I tried to fit a 200lb friend inside of it. They weighed more than the single kid that the trailer was designed for. I knew it wasn't a good idea at the time but š¤·āāļø
I haven't done much trailer investigation since then as I don't often need to carry trailer cargo these days, and when I do, I use my smaller Burley Travoy.

@xtaran A5, cont:
But to actually answer the question - I actually had a membership here when bike share was first made available. Theft is an issue here, so if there was a docking station near the start end of where I needed to go, I'd often take bike share. I ran into a few problems where the stations were empty and imbalanced, or full and so I found myself having to ride to a different station and then walk. I cancelled my membership after a year - they raised prices, and I didn't find the system reliable enough for the cost.
I like having the option of riding a cycle when I travel, so I appreciate seeing bikeshare in other cities. Often it's fairly expense compared to bus/subway though. I borrowed one to pick up some pizza when recently in New York, because I hadn't been on a bike in a while and because it was the fastest way to get that pizza.
One weird potential positive of Lyft gobbling up bikeshares is that their Pink(?) membership might allow use of bikes in multiple cities.

@SRLevine asks:
Q6. Have you built a trailer using a Wike kit? (https://wikeinc.com/products/cargo-diy)? If so did you find the final price reasonable once you bought all of the aluminum struts? And what did you use as the base (and did you include cross pieces to make it able to take heavier loads)?
(If not, do you have any other trailer-building experience?)

@xtaran A5. I thought it was pretty cool to see Timothee ride in on a bikeshare. I read a follow-up where he did it to avoid traffic, but was charged an improper locking fee by Lime. I know he can afford it, but I hope they waived it.

@InkySchwartz A4. I imagine that the types of shops with large used bins (those seem to be community-type shops in my experience) might have something that fits and might even be suspension-corrected, but as you can imagine, it's a grab bag.
As far as adapting an existing rigid fork, I've seen plenty of spacers to get the handlebar higher, but I'm not sure if any fit underneath the frame / head tube, above the fork.

Q5. What are #BikeNite participants' views on bike sharing in general? Especially because most participants seem to be avid riders and most if not all seem to have their own cycle.
Do you use bike sharing services? Even if you have your own cycle? Do you only use bike sharing services if you are in another town? Do you have preferences for specific bike sharing services? If so, why?

@pete A3. For our kids rides, I just use Google Groups. Not perfect and still involves being subject to whims of a giant company - but at least it's mostly emails.
I haven't done much recreational riding in recent years. The few rides I have done have been organized via text message. One person was organizing via Strava, I get emailed about the rides but the timing usually doesn't work out for me.
I had found out about a few things via Instagram (and previously Twitter) but I'm now trying to reduce my consumption of Meta products.

We talked about suspension-corrected forks last time. I separated what @InkySchwartz asked into 2 Qs:
I have a 2013(?) Trek Skye 13" for my tall 9yo. The fork weighs a ton and it needs help after 10 years in a barn. I'm having trouble finding suspension corrected forks for 26" wheels.
https://mtbdatabase.com/bikes/2013/trek/skye/2013-trek-skye/
Q4a. How can one find a fork that fits this bike?
Q4b. Is there another way to make a traditional rigid fork work here?

@pete asks about coordinating rides:
Q3. How do you communicate with your riding buddies/groups/orgs? Iām happy in my little Mastodon world, and have no interest in engaging in anything Meta, Musk, or platforms setting up to go that way (i.e BlueSky). I know I miss out on cycling goings on as a result of this and do struggle with that at times: principles over pragmatism?

@nix A2. Ice is pretty rare here in our section of Northern CA, but it can be rainy in the winter.
Rain prep involves hardening the bikes a bit - fenders, wet chain lube if I remember. Lights and waterproof panniers too.
Clothing: Rain jacket, rain pants, waterproof shoes, and sometimes waterproof socks. And then having a system to be able to dry it all is helpful too. I bought a small shoe/glove dryer and it's nice!
(edit: neoprene waterproof gloves too!)
@kimu might have better tips for navigating the snow, though it looks like it can still be pretty challenging sometimes!

The next question is from @nix:
Q2. I'm trying to go entirely #carfree I have a lovely cargo ebike (Globe Haul ST) that I can use in good weather. But I live in #StLouis where we get a large variety in weather. This week is a little extreme, but for example, it's been below freezing all week, and snowy.
Is there anyone that lives in a similar clime and bikes rain, sleet, or snow? Freezing or boiling? And if so, how do you do it?

A1. I am in Oakland where it's cloudier than it has been in recent days. I've been trying to sleep more to give my immune system a boost (or not stress it too much) with slight success.

Our community discussion #BikeNite starts in about an hour, at 4pm Pacific. I post cycle-y questions w/ Q1, Q2, Q3; if you answer w/ A1, A2, A3, etc, it's easier to match.
Tag #BikeNite if you want your answer to be more discoverable; follow it to see questions & replies in your feed. Boost & reply to replies to keep the discussion going.
(You can follow BikeNiteQ tag so questions are easier to find, but you don't need to include this in your answers)
Another note: I am on a backup computer today (the normal one is not working right! So apologies if things a re a little slow or off this Bike Nite)
