Saw the moon occult mars yesterday, which was cooler than I was expecting, and spotted the orange moon just above the horizon this evening from certain spots with a good view of the horizon on the way home. Clear sky two nights in a row!

Logged into cohost one last time, just to do it. I found such an amazing group of people I interacted with there, some of whom I still have contact with these other places, but it was just a website there.

Apparently the Home Assistant people sell a t-shirt that says "I spent ___ hours tinkering with my Home Assistant and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" and all I can say is I installed Home Assistant like yesterday and have spent uh, a bunch of hours tinkering with it, yeah....

I was at Best Buy today and the cashier said my Flo Mask looked good, I said it's surprisingly comfortable and also I haven't been sick in five years now. He seemed to think not being sick was good.

I have a radon meter (the Aranet) and have been messing around with putting it in my display case where I keep my radioactive things (higher reading in there!) and so on. In a closed plastic box with a bit of uranium ore or an old radium dial clock it will go offscale high in a few days. I wondered about getting a radon decay chain spectrum on my Radiacode but just the gas in a box, even if it's a lot of radon by the standards of a basement, is not that much. I got some random aquarium-filter-grade activated carbon and left it in a little box with an old clock for a few days and I was not expecting it to be as hot as it is, bury the radiacode in it and get 1.5 kcpm. I'm accumulating a spectrum now.

The good thing about being careful to avoid COVID is I could play with these cuties while wearing a Flo Mask without allergy problems!

I'm just saying, come June I never hear anyone whining about how it's still dark at 3:45 in the morning and wishes for daylight then when it's socially very useful as you go about your typical 4AM day!

By the way, we have a job opening for a mass spectrometry scientist, doing metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, glycans, the occasional small molecule drug compound etc. We also have an imaging MALDI. We're looking for someone with experience and a PhD. Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
I've been working here 29 years and transitioned here, going through a few years of highly-visibly genderqueer, and that worked out spectacularly well for me.
With any luck this link works: https://careers.peopleclick.com/careerscp/client_medcollegewi/external_staff/jobDetails.do?functionName=getJobDetail&jobPostId=32945&localeCode=en-us

When the cohost shutdown was announced lots of people there started setting up blogs. I had something running ages ago on a hosting service I've been using for [checks] 21 years now (!) and so I started looking into setting something up. I figured a static site generator would be the thing, spent some time messing eleventy and just could not make any headway on setting up something even vaguely like what I wanted. Hugo seems much much better documented for someone like me who has no modern web design experience. I've decided I've messed with it enough to put it up live now, with a few old posts copied to it:

Thanks, great.

When I started setting up my new tent, my first thought when I got the poles out was that this looks a lot more like a CANDU fuel bundle than you might expect tent parts to look like! I mean, not that much like a CANDU fuel bundle, but, again, considering this is a tent, some resemblance.
(I guess I am just like this...)

At least being able to write a thousand letters here instead of 300 on bluesky makes it more possible to say something coherent. But sure liked the long form posting complete with ability to do amazing things like italics or bold on cohost.
