A little scrap of footage from our #sailing outing yesterday. Apologies for the terrible video and audio quality. I had image stabilisation off, and it was in a protective case. I would like to make a widget to mount it onto the end of the boom. That might be a fun perspective.

We had a great time! Wind gusting to 18 knots and 0.5m chop made for some exciting inundations. Kids had a blast. Should've gone out with our smaller sail, though. I had to spend a lot of effort not going too fast and heeling us over into the river.

We briefly pulled up on the colmslie beach reserve for our traditional zooper dooper break, then scooted back to the dock. Very glad to have got a sail in.

We might actually be able to go #sailing this afternoon, if the weather holds. Hype hype hype. Fist time in a while.

My epoxy resin #pottery wheel was getting a bit scratched up so I had a ago at smoothing the surface out with some sand paper. It worked really well! 30 seconds of 600 grit wet'n'dry, followed by 30 seconds of 1200 grit. Good as new!

Apologies for the portrait video. Android's default camera app doesn't let you lock orientation, and it randomly switched from landscape to portrait between a test video and the final. Grr..

I just found this line in our C++ codebase:

(((void ()(void))(*(uint32_t *)0x2c)))();

I haven't yelled at my computer that much in a good while.

For those blessed with ignorance of C++: This line instructs the program to start executing code at a hardcoded memory address. This is bad.

For the less fortunate: The bootloader starts at 0x2c.

Got my results from my PET-CT scan: Nothing of particular concern, just need a CT scan in six months to be sure. Doc gave me an excellent prognosis and promised to set me up with some mental health resources for me and my family.

Slightly less stress! Hurrah! Still gotta go in for another surgery to remove even more of my foot though. Though at this stage I'm not too worried about a flesh wound.

Three facts:

Today I got an injection of a radioactive sugar tracer (fluoro-deoxyglucose) for a PET-CT scan.

The tracer is eliminated from the body via the kidneys.

I have a home-made cloud chamber.

Unfortunately I could see no trails from my... sample. The thorium sample was still pinging away, so I guess the walls of the container are too thick? Or maybe the gamma rays don't trigger the nucleation to form the trails?

CW: A small yellowish bottle.

The receptionist at a doctor's office today said "You're a bit early, do you want to pop out and grab a coffee while you wait?"

😭 😭 😭 😭

A handful of cheese is a poor substitute for coffee. I don't know why I thought this would work.

I grew up an atheist – my Mum had a rough time with her theocratic upbringing and omitted any of that stuff from my childhood.

My eldest son started high school today and parents were invited in to their first assembly of the year. They started with a prayer and, upon some secret phrase (not "amen", I would've clocked that), at least 80% of the audience crossed themselves simultaneously.

Unexpected, eerie cult vibes. I felt like a conspicuous outsider.

My latest #pottery glaze experiment was very educational!

Overall I'm happy with the results, except for some too-thick spots and some pinholes. I think I need to thin my glazes a little bit more.

I'd like to try dipping the glaze on, but I don't have enough glaze for that to be viable. Might have to make a trip to the pottery store this week sometime.

Oh man. My Mum just found this in a box of keepsakes from my childhood home.

It's a flier I printed and distributed to the houses on my street, circa 2000.

For a while I ran a radio station using an overvolted Dick Smiths FM radio transmitter kit and a 6-stacker CD player. When I was on the air I'd hang a sheet over the verandah with "101.5 FM" written across it.

I had to shut down when a station started using the frequency in the next town over and drowned mine out 😭

What a legitimately great idea. I don't necessarily think it can or should be enforced, but something akin to a stat. dec. that says "I know what I'm getting into and believe myself capable." is worthwhile I reckon.

My custom #solar #battery system is working great today. Based on current battery % spot electricity price and solar forecasts it calculates a buy-from-grid price threshold that will ensure the battery is topped up before the evening's price instability, even if it's cloudy.

By gradually adjusting the buy thresholds like this I ensure I'm only spending what I absolutely need to spend to mitigate high prices in the afternoon.

The pathology came back on the pea-sized lump I had removed from the bottom of my foot five weeks ago: Extra-skeletal myxoid chondosarcoma. Booked in for another surgery to chop out everything the previous operation touched, plus some more. Plus PET scan, plus plastic surgeon to fix my foot shape so I can (eventually) resume running.

Sigh. Luckily I caught it when it was small.

It takes about 5.5kWh to run my #pottery kiln up to 1100°C. Good to know!

This might be a #pottery trick everyone already knows, but yesterday I didn't have time to trim these cups before they went too hard. Last night I dampened some sponges and sat them on the base of the cups and left them overnight.

In the morning the bottoms were back to leather-hard, ready for trimming. Worked really well!

Just got a call from the surgeon who took a mystery chunk out of my foot just before Christmas. Turns out the pathology is not yet definitive enough and I may have to go back in for another operation to take more out of my foot.

This is a real kick in the dick just as I start getting back to normal. Went to the gym yesterday for the first time in a month, when I usually go twice a week.

Shit sucks.
