A Christmas tale from years past:
One of my neighbors was a UPS driver before retiring. Years ago, something happened before Christmas wherein there were huge delays on delivery of packages by UPS. I can’t recall why; it may have been a combo of weather in the closest hubs and mechanical issues locally or something. Either way, Christmas Eve arrived and a couple of weeks worth of parcels had largely NOT, for the entire neighborhood. Being a small town area, presents of a nature outside the local niches tend to get ordered online, so there were parents, grandparents, spouses, and adult children all short of things they’d intended to give the following day.
Apparently UPS doesn’t generally assign drivers to routes that include their home addresses, so our neighbor didn’t deliver to our little neighborhood. But that Christmas Eve, well into the evening dark and cold, everyone heard sounds on their front porches. Doors opened to find all their outstanding packages waiting for them. Turns out our neighbor, after working long, hard hours for weeks and weeks, got off work for Christmas and signed for custody of all the packages for everyone in the neighborhood that had been sitting around. On his own time, he brought them home and distributed to everyone. It was incredibly kind of him and everyone was very grateful.

This is horrific.
I had surgery earlier this year. I had dutifully gotten quotes from everyone, which was a stressful and prolonged mess in itself. I knew how much the anesthesia would cost, how long the surgery was expected to run, etc. Well, guess what? After I woke up, I learned it ran longer! And it needed to - the surgeon had to take extra time and care on an aspect of it to avoid permanently harming me and possibly requiring ANOTHER surgery. But this did not impact what I paid, because insurance covered it.
It still cost plenty overall due to OOP maximums and all that crap. If I’d woken up to find I owed even more money than I’d already paid? 🌋

Occasionally you run into an author who writes what are ostensibly children’s books, but are enjoyable and thought-provoking much more broadly.
Frances Hardinge is one of those. Deeplight is not my absolute favorite of her books - that remains A Face Like Glass - but it had many powerful moments. And this quote? This quote hits me again every time I read it:
“You will find out who you are when your choices test you. In the end, we are what we do and what we allow to be done.”
