News! My short story "House Brilliant" was accepted for the science fiction anthology Our Dust Earth, coming from Air and Nothingness Press this spring. This shared-world collection is set on a dying Earth in the ultra-distant future, where biomech descendants of humanity delve for artifacts of deep time.. I had a great time writing this and finding the character voices! For more info, and to support and pre-order, see Kickstarter currently in progress at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/52625019/our-dust-earth-anthology

Saw this little muskrat at Commonwealth Lake Park, adorably perched at the water's edge.

Daytime is the right and proper time for a snooze! This Poorwill kept his eyes mostly closed, but occasionally would slowly open them, while rocking side to side in this waddle-in-place motion as if getting just a bit cozier on the bed of cobbles. So awkward and endearing! There's nothing like hearing ten hardened birders simultaneously go Awwww...

So Amazing!! Watching this Poorwill right now with several other birders, so very lovely and mellow. @faerye if you are around FYI this fellow has been over at Dharma Rain Zen Center in Portland for a couple of days and is insanely obliging.

Now cleverly attempting to disguise himself as a duck...

Kind of amazed I was able to get these photos just by digiscoping with my cellphone camera. Such a cooperative pose from this fellow!

Ran into this goofy cartoon alien from planet Histrionicus down by the riverside the other day. Is the invasion already underway?

Shovelers are so goofy and cool! I forgot that they have a green speculum in addition to the powder blue wing patch, until this one caught the afternoon light with emerald.

Golden-crowned Kinglets showed up in the neighborhood this week after seemingly being gone all summer. Since my dad was an audiologist I am aware my high-frequency sensitivity has dropped somewhat in recent years - so I am always particularly pleased to still be able to pick up these near-ultrasonic calls above 8 kilohertz. Wee lisping trills up in the cedars like someone whistling through their teeth. #Birding #Kinglet #Oregon

A pair of American White Pelicans cooperatively fishing together at the wetlands this afternoon - cruising along the surface with wings cocked upward, craning their necks akimbo and peering underwater for prey. Here one poses with beak raised, wobbling the thin-skinned, sun-backlit pouch to process a successful catch - at the base of the pouch, just visible in silhouette, is the shadow of a small fish that has been nearly flipped down to the gullet! #Birding #Pelican #Oregon

Waking at 5 AM this morning, heard the first flock of White-fronted Geese passing overhead. This is the season! For about two weeks in late September they pass over #Portland en route from their Arctic breeding grounds - often at night or very high up, in huge noisy flocks. Their cries en masse are piercingly keen, attention-arresting, uniquely distinct from our usual Canadas and Cacklers. Keep bedroom windows cracked open at night for a bit and listen!
