That time of the year when I feel the urge to write my own build/integration system again.

[#]Bazel is a pain to extend and has many idiosyncracies. Also code base is way too complex and hard to penetreate. It feels generally stuck in a local maximum.

[#]Buildstream is pretty cool and extensible but variation support is not very elegant. It also still needs an inner build system. Also yaml 😒

[#]Pants seemed to be a step in the right direction. Amazingly simple extensibility. But still felt like the the build variation capabilites were not that strong.

I like starlark itself.

Does anybody know of any build system "framework" which I can just plug an play on a build tree so that I don't have to write the ugly parts of dealing with the compiler and focus on building the nice constructs for describing that build tree?

I can’t wait to see what justification the ultra centrist cope machine will come up with next just to deny reality 😒

I have a #rust crate which is reliably building in the stable channel releases of the last 4 months and has been reliably not building in the nightly channel release of the last 4 months. I am not enabling any unstable features.

What could be the problem?

I only arbitrarily stopped at 4 months ago to go to bed. I did not check yet how far back I can see this issue. But my understanding of the rustc release model tells me this shouldn’t happen…

[#]Fediverse apps need a “subscribe to thread” functionality. There are so many interesting threads and questions that I see that I would like to see the future responses to.

I like to think of myself as an exact person. Given enough information, I can find a solution.

I have been struggling with taking decisions in uncertain envirionments with incomplete information. It's something that is not fully in my nature, so it's easy to fall into crippling self-doubt.

I am making small steps towards being comfortablw with this.

But right now there is nothing that compares to the confirmation that you get that a decision you took 2 years ago with incomplete information turned out to be the right bet.

I need to prepare myself for the moment when a decision taken by me 2 years ago turned out to be the wrong one too. It will.it's invariably come. That is the true test.

The social web used to mean adding open graph data to your page so facebook can display it correctly. Not very social.

Activity pub gives this a rightful new meaning.
