Hey fellow #selfhosting nerds, I’m thinking about dropping my Office 365 subscription. I’m not concerned about the apps (Word, Excel, etc). Does it make sense to host my own email on a cheap VPS vs pay Microsoft for hosted Exchange service?

I used to host a million years ago with courier imap and exim and spam assassin, but so much has changed wrt email since then. Is exim still the “standard” or has everyone moved to postfix? What’s a good IMAP server that supports Maildir?

I hope you have a happy/wonderful/merry whatever you might be celebrating this time of year. Even if whatever “it” is, is nothing, I hope you and yours have a great rest of the year.

I’m not really doing ok, but I genuinely hope you are, so at least someone is doing well.

There are other people who are way worse off than you or I, however. Please support them however you can.

And I’m back! 3 days without power and 5 days without internet. The remnants of Helene hit Cincinnati on Friday and knocked out power to 130k other people.

I had a large branch fall and sever both the power supply line and fiber optic cable from the utility pole to my house. Luckily no one was injured, nor was there any major damage to my or my neighbors house.

My failover internet solution arrives tomorrow. Backup power will require more thought and $$$ than I can deal with right now. 🤷‍♂️🙃🫠
