The “AI is theft” thing annoys me because we already fought this fight over definitions like 20 years ago. AI models were created via piracy. Piracy of small creator’s work is bad. But it’s distinct from theft, and saying it isn’t is giving a win to the media conglomerates that spent most of the 2000s ruining kids lives for using Napster.

I have two tickets to Dungeons and Drag Queens tonight at the Crocodile in Seattle, and my spouse and I won’t be able to make it. Does anyone want them? (Free)
First dibs go to mutuals and folks on treehouse but I mostly just want to make sure the seats don’t go empty.

Me: “oh shit, there’s fires in CA?” searches for details
Google: “Here’s what Trump had to say about Democrats during the fires”
So, I finally spent 30 seconds changing the default search engine on my phone. About time I guess.

An eager stack allows you to see the most recent value that has been pushed into it (FIFO)
An eager queue allows you to see the oldest value that was pushed into it (FILO)
A lazy stream allows you to try to retrieve the next value in the collection, but this attempt may invoke arbitrary computation or nontermination (FAFO)

It was a refactor PR too, of all things. Fully unit tested but something has slipped through the cracks. And it’s dealing with LLMs so the test suite that shows the problem takes like 20 minutes to run.

I got beans from a local shop that turned out to be a super dark roast, which I really don’t enjoy on their own or in a plain latte. But my spouse likes drinks sweet and I’ve been experimenting with different flavors, and it turns out that plain simple dark roast is the way to go when adding most flavors on top. Lavender syrup is a great hit and I’m gonna try making orange chocolate syrup soon.

We’re out of all forms of milk other than individually-sized cartons of black sesame soy milk, and we wanted a latte…
Turns out it’s a really good combo! If I can find large cartons of it (that I don’t have to stab with a knife to empty out) I’m probably gonna add this to the regular rotation

I’m working my way through “functional programming in Lean” and it’s pretty fun. Downside is that when I do it in the morning my brain is fried for the next two hours. It’s not hard to follow, just a lot of information to absorb. I’m hoping to make it through enough of it in the next three days for me to start advent of code with it on Sunday.

It is bonkers how good #curl is on a bad connection. I can’t load Gmail, reddit, or duckduckgo, and it takes me 2-3 tries to upload mastodon posts, but I managed to (eventually) download a 200 megabyte binary with curl. It took 20 minutes but it succeeded first try. Firefox times out or gives HTTPS errors trying to load a basic static documentation site, but it takes less than a second to just curl down the html pages and open them locally. (without CSS unfortunately but I’ll take what I can get)
This week has really taught me how fragile most software has become in the face of network problems.

What’s the best place to dump audio files for sharing these days? I don’t necessarily want to waste my masto admin’s disk space for something that’s only gonna get played 5 times. Do #peertube instances frown on this/do they tend to have a good story for hosting costs? Should I just use SoundCloud?
(The files in question are < 30 second clips of me learning how to use my sampler)

Developers at my new job seem to use Postman a lot. I vaguely remember discourse that “postman bad”. Does anyone know the details, and have recommendations for alternatives that would help me match my coworker’s workflows?
I usually just use scripts or the node REPL to test APIs, so I don’t need recommendations in those areas. Just GUIs and potentially any way to share or import/export requests (tbh I have no idea what postman’s full feature set is)

I constantly end up on forums, stackoverflow, and reddit when doing research and I’ve developed a significant amount of disdain for people who dismiss questions with “just google it”. It’s someone who couldn’t pass up the chance to be a jerk to a single question asker, and so now their jerkishness is on display for the hundreds or thousands of people who are putting in the work and are wading through the search results.

Is there any sort of so-and-so’s law that says something like “all google searches on a topic will eventually lead to forums where people tell previous askers to just google it”?
