Java's "write once, run anywhere" wasn't quite right. The point is "build once, run anywhere" (which could also apply to platforms that run from source without building). Even now, I can use raylib or SDL or Godot or ... to write once, run anywhere, but you need to make different builds for these.

I've walked 100s or maybe 1000s of miles through the Arizona desert, and I'm getting more tempted to someday make a game/simulator with rattlesnakes, roadrunners, coyotes, Gila monsters, javelinas, jack rabbits, tarantulas, saguaros, prickly pears, chollas, ocotillos, & so on.
