Here's my write up on the experience of using Elixir for this year's #AdventOfCode. Short version: Elixir is awesome!

The story was fun, though honestly I don’t remember the stories from previous years so the references mostly passed me by.
Also topped both my company leaderboards, which is nice.
Overall, a really good and fun year!

Elixir was a delightful language. I was a little worried about not having mutable data structures, but it turned out fine, and the rest of the language was so pleasant. I’ll have a full writeup in a few days.

All done with #AdventOfCode for the year! I don’t know if it’s just me getting better, but this year felt easier than previous years. Day 21 was the only day I got at all stuck, and then only for the length of a shower, and day 24 I solved visually rather than in code.

One of the things I really like about #AdventOfCode is that the later problems admit different solutions. I think I used a different technique than Kate did for every major part of today’s puzzle, and we both solved it!

Something that’s really impressed me so far is Elixir has a very practical standard library. Basically every function I’ve looked for has been there, and all the interfaces have the shape and function I want (even sometimes with me originally thinking I want something else, like Regex.scan).

Pleased with Elixir so far for #AdventOfCode. I’ve been able to solve every day in one line*, wondering how much longer I can keep that up.

Alright, after a lot of being inundated at work and general procrastination, I’ve decided that I’m going to do this year’s #AdventOfCode in Elixir. I’ve solved last year’s day 1 puzzle in it now, so I’m ready to go!

So I finally finishing going through Void Stranger once, and though it was a bit frustrating at times I thought it was really enjoyable overall.
And then what I got for my trouble is an ambiguous ending and being sent back to the start to do everything all over again. No twist, just everything the same again. And I’m not sure if I’m just cranky, but this feels so disrespectful of my time that it’s soured my opinion of everything that came before.

These kids of posts are endlessly fascinating to me. It’s like a window into another world where everything sucks.
My main thing I wish people would know is that there are better places out there! They usually even pay better! We’re hiring! Our data people produce meaningful changes to the company!

Ms. 5 loves the Rainbow Magic books. Every one has the same plot: Jack Frost steals a fairy's magic object and some girls need to get it back.
Among many (many!) issues I have with this series, the fairies each have a remit, and they're wildly unequal.
This is Martha the Doctor Fairy. Without her magic, medicine doesn't work.
Over here is Mimi the Laughter Fairy, responsible for all mirth.
And this is Mariana the Goldilocks Fairy. Her magic makes sure people tell Goldilocks properly.

Went on a tour of the Arsenal stadium today (a birthday gift for Mr. 8), and it was surprisingly great! It’s entirely at-your-own-pace, you get to visit lots of cool spaces like the press room and the changing rooms, and the stadium itself is obviously a marvelous design. Definitely recommended.

@overcastfm Is it known that priority lists are broken since the redesign? I consistently get non-priority episodes showing up above the high priority podcasts in the list.

@gruber The STOP keyword is effective because cross-carrier short codes are managed by the CTIA (the wireless company industry body), and they're apparently militant about people following the short code rules, which include responding to specific responses like HELP and STOP.
If someone texting you from a short code doesn't respect STOP, they will absolutely pull their short code, which is great for everyone.

I’ll never get over the fact that when the University of Oklahoma needed a nickname for their football team, they basically chose “The Cheaters”, and then everyone else in Oklahoma was like, “Yes, what a great nickname, let that be the nickname for all Oklahomans!”

This really resonated with me as the same fundamental mindset I have when dealing with computers, and I’m convinced this is essential to whatever amount of success I’ve found. https://blog.nelhage.com/post/computers-can-be-understood/
