Fascism starts with people feeling powerless. Then, a populist aims their fear and anger at people they already dislike or hate, fanning the flames of hatred and violence, in order to consolidate power by making people feel in control again. This process continues, moving to new targets of hatred as the old fuel is burned away. The populist guides the hatred to new targets intentionally, knowing that this is the source of their power. Mass murder is an inevitable outcome if the flames of hatred aren't extinguished early on. You are either already a target, or you are being used right up until you become one yourself.

I worry it's too late for us to stop the fascists from creating an echo of the Holocaust here in the US. Tell your children to watch and remember, and to tell the stories when they're old. Maybe we can help head off the next cycle.

I could use some community advice. I have multiple sleep disorders: apnea, insomnia, and "social jetlag," where my body disregards the local time and acts as if I belong in a timezone several hours behind the local time no matter what I do. I have treatments for these, including a CPAP and medication to sleep at night and be awake in the day, but even so, I am struggling mightily with the early morning meetings with my new job, to the point that being awake for them is ruining my productivity for the rest of the day.
Added to this, I'm autistic, which makes it hard to communicate my needs effectively, and I had a very bad experience in a previous job when went to HR about it to request an accommodation. (They forced me to take unpaid medical leave rather than allow me to adjust my work schedule slightly, and I had to interact with a very ableist HR person regularly from then on.)
How do I bring this up with my new boss and find a happy compromise that lets me do my job?

@actuallyautistic Meeting with the same group of people today, and someone was speaking loudly in the background. I posted a message in the meeting chat explaining that I can't separate foreground from background and asking that noise be limited when possible. This was a lot easier of a social situation, since I didn't have to confront or appear to blame a specific person. They said they would try to limit background noise in the future, so potential big win there.

Addendum: Please do not come into my mentions and tell me I should have spoken up. Like many autistic people, I can be slower to process verbal communication. By the time I realized what was happening, everyone else had already answered, and the conversation had moved on. The person who was playing the music already knows I'm autistic. The whole reason for my post is to address the general ignorance I find in society surrounding the impacts of these sorts of behaviors on autistic people. I am speaking up, in other words. Right here, right now. My hope is that more people will think twice about doing this sort of thing in the first place, before it becomes an awkward and stressful situation where the onus for correcting the problem falls squarely on the very person who has a disability affecting social communication.

Even when I'm writing about something negative...it is so nice to be writing about something other than begging people for money so I can feed my family.
I'm out of the woods, finally. But there are so many people who aren't. I wish we could set things up so "rock bottom" isn't equivalent to homelessness, hunger, and lack of health care. Implementing a UBI, for example.
But first, we have to uproot the fascism that has taken hold in our government.

Little things done to be respectful of others' needs have an outsized positive impact on other people's lives -- especially those of us who don't fit in as well, and have unusual needs that others overlook on a regular basis.

@actuallyautistic This isn't an occasional thing. This sort of silent sidelining of our needs happens literally every day, though the details vary. The end result is a feeling of being trapped and your own needs not mattering. There's also a massive load of stress from dealing with these situations, which results in perpetual fatigue & low energy, a weakened immune system, and often depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. And then we are blamed for not paying attention or not being engaged enough. It's a perpetual snowball effect.

Someone plays music in the background during a meeting. They ask if it's bothering people. Neurotypical folks on the call quickly speak up and say it's fine.
The autistic person on the call (me):
Meanwhile, no one on the call even realizes something is wrong or that the autistic person just got screwed over, completely by accident.

Got my first paycheck in just shy of a year yesterday! I can't believe we survived intact! Thank you all so much for helping us through this unbelievably difficult time. We couldn't have done it without you. You helped to feed my kids, keep us from losing our car, and keep the lights and water turned on. I can't begin to express the gratitude I feel towards all of you, and the degree to which my faith in humanity has been restored.
Please boost this so everyone who helped sees it. You are all amazing and deserve to know that.

Anyone who isn't part of the master class (rich old abled neurotypical straight white men) should probably start making plans for an emergency exit from the US. Power, money, and the ignorant masses are all aligned with the same goal. We are going to give Germany a real challenge on their world title for most tragic and horrible mistakes in history. Look at the speed at which they are working to tear down every institution and tradition that doesn't benefit the master class.
How long do you think it will take before they run out of legal and cultural targets and move on to physical ones? Seriously, try to gage it. How many symbols are left to be torn down before it shifts to real human beings? Oh, that's right, they've already started work on that. Okay. How long till it shifts from stealing opportunities and rights to stealing the breath from our lungs?

We could really use some emergency help with this. We have enough to get dinner tonight, but the electric bill was scheduled to be cut off on Friday, which means they'll probably cut it tomorrow if we don't pay it tonight. The bill is $161. We also still need food money for tomorrow through the 25th. Please help!

We have 55 cents to our name. My first paycheck won't be deposited until the 25th, and I have 2 kids and 2 adults to feed till then. Any help we can get with food and gas for the next 10 days would be greatly appreciated. After that, hopefully, I will never have to ask for help again, and maybe I can even start paying some folks back. Many thanks!

The c# dev I mentioned is actually a jack of all trades. C#, Python, assembly, full stack, electronics, control & sense applications, LLMs, you name it. He's the kind of guy that can just learn a thing in tremendous depth very quickly, and thrives on complex and difficult problems.

Turns our several folks I know were impacted. Also a C# dev and a tech manager, maybe others. All have decades of experience working with healthcare, telecom, and financial data. And they're good people, which means a lot coming from an autistic dude. I'm picky about who I call "friend".

A former colleague and old friend just got laid off. She has an MS in ITDS (information technology and decision science) and a ton of experience with SQL, and is a very reliable and consistent worker. She's also comfortable with Python and C#. Please let me know of any opportunities you may know of in that area, and I'll pass it along!

Would anyone be willing to make dinner possible for my family tonight? It's still a week or two till I get my first paycheck, we have 4 mouths to feed, and our balance is down to $6.28. Thanks in advance for any help you can give us!

LLMs suck because we are using them wrong. We are using them to automate things, to answer factual questions, and to "think" for us, none of which they are reliable enough to do. If you want to use LLMs effectively, use them for exploration. They are great for making the first pass at a difficult task, after which human beings repair the mistaken assumptions, bad logic, faulty knowledge retrieval, and poor "thinking", they inevitably display, carrying the project to completion. Use them for the easy work, not the heavy lifting.
I use LLMs to generate the first, very broken, version of programs I'm writing, to produce pseudoknowledge that points me in the direction of actual knowledge that I research and confirm myself, and to suggest failed lines of reasoning that I can correct with real, actual thought. Nothing an LLM generates should be trusted without thorough review, but they can be used to do the first 80% of the work.
