As an optimizer from way back, I'm a bit surprised to find myself so dismissive of Peter Attia's optimizations of zone-2 cardio.

Talking about reemphasizing movement over exercise (while still talking quite a bit about exercise).

"Is this batch of students worse than usual?"

"You mean, for the senior trip? I guess about the same as usual. Why?"

"Well, I haven't been able to get them to refer to me as their 'chaperone.'"

"I think I see ." Her eyes turned hard as she stood. "Kids, let me make this perfectly clear. Anyone who refers to one of the chaperones as their #escort is going to be confined to the bus while everyone else gets to go to the top of the empire state building."

"What's your plan?" Nate asked

"Camp in the woods for three days with just a knife and one match," Tom said.

"So, it's like a vision quest?"

"No. That would be cultural appropriation."

"But you're hoping to see your #spirit animal?"

"No," Tom replied, his tone dismissive.

"Well, what do you call it?"

"I call it 'Camp in the woods for three days with just a knife and one match.'"

"But…" Nate flapped his arms helplessly.

Tom kept any trace of satisfaction off his face.

Zoom in one tick on the map at the top of this page, and you can see that my home in Alhambra was less than 10 miles from what is now an evacuation zone: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/01/08/weather/los-angeles-fire-maps-california.html?unlocked_article_code=1.n04.SlUT.ci62tjK8ZDWo&smid=url-share

“Of course!” She relaxed just a bit, and extended the hand that had been ready to reach for a weapon. “There’s a contest there, you know,” she said. “Do you want to try for the #crown?”

“Yes,” I said. “Together we have a real chance.”

Her hand was ready to draw a gun or a knife. Her weight balanced, ready to move any direction. “What do you want?”

“I was thinking,” I said, then my voice tailed off.

“Yes?”

“Would you like to go dancing? There’s a place just another block down this street. It’s for people—“

“People who move well?”

“Yes!” I said. “You know it?”

IIn a moment she knew I was there. I saw the slight change in her posture, the glance at a shop window that gave her an angle to see my reflection.

When I was just out of range for hand-to-hand, but closer than you’d want for a gun fight, she pivoted on one toe and the other heel, turning to face me. “I recognize you,” she said. “You were in the gym, a day or two ago.”

"Yes."

She was just a little awkward. Not clumsy, just not quite perfectly balanced. She walked like a regular person.

She did it very well. I'd have been fooled, if I hadn't followed her to her gym, and paid up for a guest membership that only a celebrity could afford. In there, where everyone was famous, and cameras were banned, she moved... better. Like a dancer. Like a martial artist. Like a goddess.

I changed to the same side of the street, picked up the pace.

I shrugged, and nodded to the seat.

She sat, gestured to the bartender, and got a glass of amber liquid that looked a lot like mine.

The music started. She quietly said "Ah. #round about midnight."

I nodded. There were two seats with perfect acoustics.

I looked the length of the bar, which was more than half empty.

The speaker was a rather pretty girl in a very short skirt and a cropped top that showed off a flat belly.

"I'm just here for the music," I said.

"Oh, me too," the woman said. Then she looked down and seemed to notice how she was dressed. "Sorry," she said. "If I'd taken time to change, I'd have missed half the first set."

The bartender knew what I wanted, and brought a bourbon on the rocks without asking.

I'd gotten there at exactly the right time, and gotten one of the seats with perfect acoustics. The little jazz combo was tuning up. I'd have just a minute to appreciate my bourbon before the first number. I took a first sip and held it in my mouth for a moment before swallowing.

"Is this seat taken?"

"Do you want to go camping?"

"Sure! When?"

"Right now."

"Um. Okay? Where are we going?"

"A recreation area called flaming #gorge"

"Is it pretty?"

"Oh, yes. Very. Red rocks. Vistas. Water. You'll like it!"

"Is that why you want to go?"

"No, not at all. I want to go because there's a campground there where the cell service is terrible, and I want to go off grid so I can't be served a subpoena."

"La la la, I can't hear you."

"For the best."
