Came across #HarrietMartineau's #SocietyInAmerica by following a trail of citations and this feels like one of those "she actually did important #sociological work but we don't talk about her because she's a #woman" sort of things.

From Johnston (1937):

"A decision of the Louisiana courts in 1832 declared that the decisions of the courts of France were no longer binding as they affect the m****to offspring of white men and that it has been found necessary to pass many restrictive acts to protect white 'heirs from the too great fondness of the natural parents of such children.'”

The court case that was then cited was Jung vs Doriscourts et al. (1832)

From Rogers (1942):

"In 1832, the Louisiana courts declared that the old French laws and decisions were no longer binding. It was found necessary, says James H. Johnston, to pass many restrictive acts to protect, as was said white 'heirs from too great fondness of the natural parents' of m****to children."

From J. Martin (2000):

"Unfortunately, however, in 1832 American lawmakers declared the old French laws no longer binding. New restrictions were passed to protect white heirs from what was termed 'too great fondness of the natural parents of m****to children.'"

Ok, last one, because this citation hole is a doozy. J. Martin (2000) wrote about the effects of an 1832 law on the ability of children born through plaçage arrangements receive inheritances. She cited Rogers (1942), but he cited Johnston (1937) who cited a court case from 1832. The kicker is that all but the last of them included both a quote from the case with no clear attribution and paragraphs that were hardly modified copies of each other. Here they are:

Another fun citation hole: in discussing the existence of "cordons bleus" in the plaçage days of #Louisiana, J. Martin (2000) cited Roussève (1937) who cited Embree (1931) who cited literally no one and was certainly not alive early enough to know of them firsthand. Who knows if this group ever existed

An example of frustrating #citations in #academic works on #history: J. Martin (2000) is often cited by #sociolinguists and #sociologists working on #Louisiana and #Creoles. At one point, she discussed the tignon law, (unclearly) citing Roussève (1937), but Roussève cited G. King (1895) who herself cited the ordinance directly. It's like the telephone whisper game, hoping that the info stays intact.

Reading mid- to late- 20th century #academic works on the #history of #Louisiana, #slavery, and #Creoles, it's frustrating how bad citations can be. The formating (1 footnote per paragraph) makes it hard to tell which source the information came from, the sources often aren't primary sources, and interpretive liberties are often taken of those sources. Is this still the norm in this field?

Sighted in #CaptainAmerica / #IronMan c1967: an add for a #pet #squirrelmonkey. This reminds me of a relative who decided it would be a good idea to have #sugargliders as #pets before randomly releasing them into the woods. This stuff is upsetting because most people have no clue how to properly care for #animals.

Strange to not have any #Labov quotes to share that I find poignant despite being the giant of #sociolinguistics and despite how much of his work I've read. He always struck me as a workhorse with a lot of interesting method ideas but not someone terribly concerned with #socialtheory where one's writing might become more touching. His legacy and influence will undoubtedly persist for a very long time still.

[#]StanLee decided to #rhyme "Don" with "One" in this #Avengers issue from 1967. It seems like quite a stretch, but maybe this says something about how close these vowels were for him at that time.
