my hot take on NMS is it has always been awesome, it launched awesome. now it is different and so much more everything but playing it launch day will be burned into my memory as one of the most special moments i've had with the medium

i can't believe i'm restarting my never-quite-launched website again but here i am. goodbye astro, hello quartz. i just want something with, i dunno better vibes? less pressure? more of an asset management story? i am just trying to trick my brain into letting me ship this thing

after 5 weeks of emailing, ringing, and absolute tripe i finally have a refund for my meta ray-bans (issued, amusingly, part-wise, 5 separate partial refunds)

after my experiences i would strongly advise against buying glasses from their website. they did not fit and shipped the wrong colour. the fitting issue would have been apparent if there was anywhere near me to try them on, but there wasn't and i decided to chance it. learn from my mistake!

they do not do easy returns on optical goods - they claim it all over the website but when you pick a prescription lens all those claims vanish but no warning is given.

the people i dealt with were lovely but the system is clearly very screwed. it's clear that wearables have a LONG way to go in terms of supporting a range of head sizes.

not psyched about the liberal party stealing my taxes, wasting the courts' time suing the electoral commission. to pretend the application process is too hard after going through it successfully for the entire history of the party is beyond laughable. and any positive outcome for them will surely further extend the already indefensible, undemocratic and unfair privilege the major parties voted themselves to attempt to defend their electorates from third parties and independents

its super rad how there's a whole bunch of #threads people on #mastodon now who look like normal users, and who sometimes say something you might want to reply to so you spend some time crafting a good reply and then when you go to post it it doesn't work because they're not real

i'm here to have conversations with people, not be broadcasted at

Yesterday in a fit of optimism I tried to install Bazzite Linux on my Ayaneo Geek, my Steam Deck-like, in an attempt to make it a more streamlined experience over the frequently clunky and ill suited default Windows.

My girlfriend gave an immediate snort of laughter at the notion of installing Linux being part of any recipe to achieve these aims.

While there is much that is great about the distribution and the results many have achieved in with it, her instincts were correct. After many, many hours of faffing around I ended with a very nice user interface that couldn’t successfully launch any games.

Even if I felt like I wanted to figure out how to debug that, it would lack suspend/resume support and would require so much additional clunkiness to the current setup to boot back into windows to play the many fine non-compatible games that I felt the setup for me could not pull its own weight.

I look forward to checking back in if it becomes an officially supported hardware platform.

so i just spent? a bunch of time pouring through some of google’s own go code? and it's like? it's filled with high rising terminals? because every single statement? is prefixed with an if statement? to check if it worked? and it seems really irritating?

does anyone actually like twitch how she is played

like what a promise, right? hang out with cool folks making or playing stuff online, everyone a public access channel where they are live and free

but it turns every thing, every person, into a weird fucking pay to play truth or dare hypermonetised clothed strip booth, a grasping desperate attentionless telethon melange, conformally identical through optimisation to convert and exploit

its easy to understand how it got this way but lets stop and think about this for a second and ask is this actually doing anything for anyone?

but seriously folks there's no way this would pass cert for consoles. hell, i’ve been responsible for some pretty fast and loose QA but 'the first screen after starting it is broken' is a new one. this is certainly not helping the #AppleArchive trajectory narrative

The new Puyo Puyo game on Apple Arcade was done by this cool new studio. Wonder if they’re hiring?

lol for the past couple of days I thought the #xz thing was about #zx, #google’s pretty good tool and library for writing shell scripts in #javascript, which I used in a bunch of projects at work and was dreading having to sort out when I go back to that next week 😅

@mike_k @jagreenwood that is a good summary of my ongoing friction I’ve experienced in Apple platform development. There are really strong exciting patterns that get you psyched up and then you realise they’re paper thin and you’re going to have to do things the old way. And by the time the cool thing is mature there’s a new cool thing and the previously cool thing is burdened down with all the weight it was made to carry.

@mike_k he sure is a weird one, and not really my kind of weird. dude was ranting about masks and Apple Store employees unionising couple years back. his job is so utterly divorced from even a very strange and rare career like full time tech reviewer that it’s almost impossible to find his worldview applicable to anyone.

They could make you buy a new MacBook Pro for it if you needed to upgrade the port and everyone would do it. The total price could be easily over a AVP but you get a regular computer AND a headset so it would feel like a better deal.

Also they should make the HDMI port an in/out port so you can plug your video game console in and use either your headset or your MacBook as a tv. They should just do that anyway.

yo what if the next apple vision was an accessory for a macbook pro

aluminium frame, plastic case, no processor, plugs right in to the macbook pro which does all the software and processing except the R1 is still in the headset. no eyesight display. optional audio pods to drive that price down even lower.

much less portable but you get, i don't know, 4 floating 4K displays on a pro, 6 on a max. way cheaper. i think it would slay.
