Today’s lineup of #Antifascist films on #TCM gave me a smile: https://www.tcm.com/schedule
The MLK Day lineup w/ Bernice King was excellent last night too. Nationtime (1972) doc on the 1972 Black Convention plus I Am Somebody (1970) about black nurses striking for better treatment and wages in Charleston, SC 💯
They’ve really understood the assignment lately. Where all other media companies have been failing. Is this because they’re operating on two cents and some spit at the moment?

Every time I look up #solar to try to better understand it, I’m left confused. I’m no stranger to scientific jargon, but this is just not my field. This seems like bad news for widespread public adoption.
We need to break down the process of getting #SolarPanels into easy to understand plain language.
Let’s share some knowledge.
Do you have solar panels?
How did you learn about the process from regulations + rebates + buying the right materials to setup/hookup + selling excess energy?

[#]Bakersfield CA:
“Border Patrol agents in unmarked SUVs rounded up people in vans outside a gas station frequented by field workers and a Home Depot where day laborers are known to look for work.
Throughout the raids, Border Patrol appeared to be profiling farm workers….
[T]he impact of fear is more widespread. Workers across the Central Valley are scared to go about their daily routines.”

Her campaign has several trainings this week:
Tues (Jan 14, 6 PM): Help to collect ballot signatures https://www.mobilize.us/spanbergerforgovernor/event/749374/
Wed (Jan 15, 6 PM): Host an event https://www.mobilize.us/spanbergerforgovernor/event/749375/
Sun (Jan 19, 6 PM): Learn how to tell your story https://www.mobilize.us/spanbergerforgovernor/event/749373/
They are also planning community gatherings for Inauguration Day, which will be a hard day for many. Spending the day w/ friends & neighbors can help.
I’ll be attending these to help and share with others.

I’ve done statewide ballot signatures before. It’s not easy work especially in rural areas. Even in populous areas it can be challenging if a land owner disagrees with your candidate (eg, farmers markets). It taught me to think about our public spaces and where we are allowed to start political conversations.
I don’t want to make signatures my entire organizing efforts. But it can be part of these efforts as we engage neighbors and prepare for the incoming administration.

Just got off a kickoff call for Abigail Spanberger’s Campaign for #Virginia Governor. Over 400 people on the call!
The big focus right now is building volunteer groups for collecting ballot signatures. She needs at least 10,000 signatures but they have set a goal for over 30,000.
Ballot signatures are a strange Virginia quirk. But they can be a blessing in disguise. It’s a first test of a campaign’s outreach efforts. And locally, it can be a good way to start organizing convos.

Money is a big part of this conversation. Every single big bank in America still has a huge chunk of investments in oil.
Postelection, 6 big banks are leaving the Net Zero Alliance: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/jan/08/us-banks-quit-net-zero-alliance-before-trump-inauguration
They need to hear from customers en mass. Don’t let them backslide.
Do you have an account with one of these banks?
-JP Morgan (Chase)
-Bank of America
-Citigroup
-Morgan Stanley
-Goldman Sachs
-Wells Fargo
Call them up and complain. Name a competitor of interest: https://www.unepfi.org/net-zero-banking/members/

[#]LAFires could be any one of us under the right conditions, all of which #ClimateChange are increasing. Once in a 100 years becomes once a year.
I used to think of wildfires as a West Coast risk. Then in 2023, we had a drought in Virginia and sudden very unusually dry air. A tinderbox.
We had several wildfires at once. Our governor declared a state of emergency on election day. I got an alert that a wildfire was nearby. Thankfully it was still 30-40 miles away. But a wakeup call nonetheless.

[#]ClimateCrisis is too big. Too daunting. Too overwhelming.
Let’s talk about one number: How many millions of barrels of oil did we burn on Earth yesterday?
105 million barrels
That’s one day.
For the last 20 years, this number has continued to increase. In 2018, we reached 100 million barrels of oil consumed per day globally. This number has only increased every year since, not including the small downturn in 2020.
2025 projections: 106 million📈
This is the wrong direction!

This number needs to decrease.
Ask politicians, companies, state officials, organizations, your banks, your boss, what are we doing to decrease this number? Show me the plan.
There’s some fairytale thinking out there that the oil consumption can continue to grow even while we bring down carbon. It’s bullshit.
Big oil sees climate change policy as a threat to their bottom line.
Flip the script: Their bottom line is a threat to our world. All of us.
We cannot continue as we have.

I’ve been using #Metatext as an app for #Mastodon since 2022. But lately I’ve been having lotsa of trouble with it.
I notice it’s been slow to load the last two weeks when I open it and then I move on to other things. I think it’s time to explore other options?
Anyone have a better rec for a Mastodon client? Which app do you use?

[#]LateNightThoughts: If we wanted to revive local radio, what would that look like?
We know the problems. It’s been dying for a solid 15 years. Big corps buying up stations across the country then making them shitty and bleeding listeners left and right. People turned to SiriusXM’s national model, personal playlists, or podcasts instead.
But if we just consider the technology itself, for local news and communication, there is nothing quite like it. We’d be fools to let it die completely.

“Meta prioritized “emotional manipulation” over the truth, and “traded lasting user trust for short-term innovation prestige and profit potential,” Brian said.”
Emotional manipulation.
That’s the business of Facebook/Instagram/Threads these days.
Not social media.
HealthLine’s PsychCentral defines emotional manipulation as “the misuse of your feelings to push you toward behaviors or thoughts you wouldn’t otherwise align with.”
As in the hallmark of toxic abusive relationships.

Your duty as a citizen this holiday season:
Ensure every single person in your life knows that this $2k drug cap is happening (effective Jan ‘25) because Democrats fought for it.
Democrats elected in 2020 with a majority in the House and Senate and a Democrat president. A Dem trifecta.
Social Security. Medicare. Medicaid. ACA.
You don’t get health care progress without a Dem trifecta because Republicans do not want to help you. Period.

I woke up the day after Election Day dreaming in green and searched for composting tips and solar regulations in Virginia.
I appreciate this list of the progress that’s been made: https://time.com/7178677/climate-scientist-optimist-refuse-to-give-up-hope/
I know it’s not enough. But we gotta dig deep for the #hopepunk right now in #ClimateCrisis.
Remember despair is how they win. We can harness energy from the ☀️ and billionaires want us to continue to pay to burn the earth?
Nah, go talk to your neighbors about solar panels.
