sources have informed me that even once we make it through january, there will still be february to contend with. trying to confirm this discouraging piece of information because it seems pretty harsh if true

wow, this photo is awe-inspiring. in the article, surfers compare the tremendous power of the ocean to some great beast, a monster or a dinosaur. i can almost imagine it, like being held in the hand of a god.
i want this energy in the new year, i think. to see a wave the size of a mountain and find a way to let its momentum carry you forward rather than destroy you.

i may write something more tomorrow; tonight my shadow calls me to rest and perchance to dream. here is a poem from 2022. i think often of the last few lines:
the vast machinery of the cosmos doesn't wait on belief
but bears us ever onward: evening to morning,
winter to summer, like breathing out, breathing in.
we needn't get out and push:
those without the strength will be carried.

be still for a moment. breathe out. listen carefully, in the space between breaths. now breathe in. do you feel that? both darkness and light exerting nearly equal force. we will pause here in the deepest night and decide what to carry with us and what to leave behind. and then, so slowly, we’ll begin to make our way back into the light.
happy solstice, dears. thank the shadow for its wisdom and turn your face toward the distant sun. it is a long road, but the year is turning. fiat lux.

naturally it took noted scumbag Eric Adams all of five seconds to start using this as an excuse to revisit banning masks on the subway, in cabs and in businesses. “the longer this guy was at large, the more dangerous the situation became”
this is an absurd statement to make of a targeted, premeditated and motivated attack, unless you’re a scumbag CEO (or possibly a scumbag mayor)

it’s because the earth’s orbit isn’t circular, but elliptical, in case you’re curious. here’s a good explainer from last year: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-winter-solstice-has-a-surprising-secret/

‘tis the season… when i obsessively look up “days until the solstice”
(currently: 22)
also, in case anyone else needs to hear this, sunset times start trending later slightly before the actual solstice date. it’s almost as bad as it’s going to get - where i am, sunset will only lose another 2 minutes before beginning to slowly shift later again on Dec 10th.
between Dec 10th and the shortest day of the year, we’ll get three minutes of evening light back.
hang in there. the light will return.

caught up with an old friend tonight and when the conversation turned, as it must, to the horrors, i was struggling to explain my nascent idea of what my work looks like now. “it’s stepping out of the rip tide. it’s a lateral move. it’s finding a third way, trickster energy. but it’s also merciless. but merciless without buying into their framing of the world.”
he thought about this for a moment and then said, “glitterbombing?”
“yes,” i said, “yes. glitterbombing is praxis.”

went ice skating last night, because i was walking through the park and they had the rink set up and there weren’t many people skating and i had no pressing commitments. it was very grounding.
