When on my lap, Katu used to nuzzle her head into my hand, so her face was completely covered. She’d happily sleep like that, her hot breath ticking my palm.

Last night was the first time she did this since returning from her lost year 😻

I hate shoes that can’t be fixed. When I worked in an office I always bought shoes that could be repaired, some of which I still have. I even managed to find some walking shoes that can be resoled, but my very expensive Dubarry sailing boots can’t have their soles replaced (or even reattached) even though the uppers are fine. No more of those!

Boomerang Squeaklets! They’re back!

These two were adopted, now they’re not… mum #SqueakyTheStray has welcomed them back into the cabin, and the cat count is now back up to 8.

Big Eddie is the world’s messiest eater, he licks his food out of his bowl and onto the floor.

We got him a special bowl that’s raised and angled towards him, but he just reaches over from the side or rear and licks food off the low side!

So…I made him a bowl stand, which looks like either a lectern or a urinal, but means he can only reach his bowl from the front.

If it works, I’ll make a tidier model.

The originals, Eddie and Katu, back together again.

We adopted these two nearly 9 years ago, it’s only when Katu went missing last year that we started acquiring stray black & whites (currently 4, peaked at 7).

I’m enjoying BBC R4’s programmes celebrating the centenary of the Shipping Forecast.

I started sailing before GPS and mobile phones. Waking early to listen to the Shipping Forecast was routine. It’s not that many years ago that a morning forecast had me waking my wife, casting off even before coffee, and making a run across Lyme Bay ahead of forecast strong winds.

I’ve just been plumbing in a new sink.

In the North,, where I’m from, we have cold on the right, hot on the left. Down here in West Cork it’s the other way round. Which make me wonder…where is the tap border? Is it a political NI(UK) / RoI divide, is it regional, is it sectarian like toasters?

I’m going to miss the Squeaklets escorting me to their cabin at feeding time. The last one was delivered to her adoptive family this afternoon. Mum #SqueakyTheStray is going to be lonely, but she’ll have some time to herself now. She was the most attentive mother, she’s a lovely wee cat and I’m hoping to find her a home of her own too.

Before Katu disappeared, this was her absolute favourite box. She’d hide out in it in the living room, sleep in it at night. I’d carry her, in her box, out of the living room at bedtime, she wouldn’t leave it.

When she went missing, we kept the box, an act of faith that she’d some day need it again. Labelled it so it didn’t get re-used.

13 months later, she’s been back home a month and is back in her old lair 😻
