How does the pedicab economy work? Like are there enough people who fall into the Venn diagram of “would like to travel at a slow bike speed but too lazy to do the biking themselves”? I see them parked all over Copenhagen and I’m just genuinely curious how they’re making rent.

If you need a break from the world I strongly recommend No Man Sky. The latest update has turned the beauty of the worlds up to 11 and has been a really soothing experience to walk around and look at stuff.

One realization I’ve had as an adult taking classes on stuff is how much obsessing on performance ruined school as a kid for me.
I enjoy studying and learning from passionate teachers, so it sucks that I was saddled with this fear of failure as a kid by society that sucked every element of joy out of the process.
Maybe that’s inevitable to some extent. Like maybe there isn’t a way to impart to children that school is important while still allowing them space to fail.
But it’s still a little sad to study stuff as an adult that, as a kid, I remember being terribly complex or stressful and now is very enjoyable to do.

I understand like we have to write something but this is absolutely the funniest question for a major games website to ask.
If you have not purchased a switch there is no reason to buy one now and you should obviously wait. https://mastodon.social/@polygon/113872435769980067

Enjoyed this piece by Felix Rieseberg about Electron and things people get wrong about it. As someone who isn't a fan of Electron it's important to address some of the criticism of Electron apps and how web technology is not lesser than more native code.
My only argument against the success of Electron is I don't think it has anything to do with quality. I think Electron succeeded because it was the cheapest option for companies to ship their apps to multiple platforms, even if the experience was far inferior.
When a company ships an Electron app, they're saying "we don't care if this is a good experience, we think it's a good enough experience to justify the cheaper development process".

The speed by which US news is going to try to gaslight me is incredible. The Washington Post is attempting to pitch me on the idea that what I saw wasn’t a Nazi salute and it’s impossible for me to say that it was because I don’t personally know Elon Musk. Also if I insist on calling it that it’s maybe discriminating against Elon because he said he’s “somewhat autistic”.
Elon Musk is not some shadowy figure I never hear from. I have been forced to interact with this clown every week for two years. I know too much about Elon, more than I want to know. I know he’s a shitty father to kids he never sees, a bad partner to women he doesn’t care about and an abusive boss.
The idea that the road to “healing America” is to act like I don’t see alarming stuff is absolutely the craziest idea I’ve heard in years.
Democracy dies in terrible writing should be their new tagline.

Install Microsoft teams. Get prompted that there is an update available. Install updated. Have Microsoft AutoUpdate launch again and tell me there are no updates. Join call. Have audio not work. Leave call and rejoin call. Audio now works but video quality is impossibly low. Quit app and reopen. Have Microsoft AutoUpdate launch again and ask me to wait while it initializes. 45 seconds pass, it informs me there is no update available. Rejoin call. Video call is better but audio sounds weird.
Whoever designed Microsoft Teams I hope you are in therapy and this period of extreme rage towards your users is behind you.

Another Trump presidency means 4 more years of Europeans asking at every social event and gathering some variation of “why are you all so stupid?”
I will try to make some joke and then one of the question askers will confidently start to explain US politics to me. This explanation is almost always wrong, based on either a fundamental misunderstanding of how US law works or how elections work.
Then I am often asked to explain why the US has not done something the question askers feels is reasonable. I am unable to provide a sufficiently compelling answer and they begin to argue with me as if I have made this decision.
The conversation ends when I stop talking and just shrug at every comment until the person runs out of steam. Then they will snap out of their rant and reassure me that they don’t mean I am stupid. Just everyone I’m related to, worked with or went to school with.
Repeat this a thousand times at parties, coffee machines, dinners and bars. #expat

Great writeup by Brooke Kuhlmann about git trailers, a concept I've never heard of before but definitely one I intend to use in my workflow. It allows for commit messages to be written with a human audience but still allow automations that rely on commit message data to function. Really useful.

I am furious at #Google right now. A while ago my job evaluated #Gemini #AI and found it to be not worth the money. So we disabled all the AI features in workspaces.
Imagine my goddamn surprise when Google seemingly enabled the feature in our Admin account now that they aren't charging per-user for it and has now completely plastered Google Workspaces with ads for AI. Now Google Docs has a broken AI chat window and users are getting giant advertisements to use Gemini even though its not on.
I've never seen a company completely fuck up a paid product like this before. Whatever project management at Google OK'd this trainwreck should switch careers.

This and jobs. I just had a long debate with a friend who has set up shop in Texas and was talking about how he can’t get qualified candidates to apply for his team. My argument was “more than 50% of the population can’t realistically move there because they are being denied basic human rights.”
Political parties aside, it’s not a move my wife and I would consider for any amount of money. What would I say? “Alright family, I know 2 of you might die from this move but I think it’s really the right financial play.”

I eagerly await these #shopify posts by the YJIT team and Maxime Chevalier-Boisvert about their improvements to Ruby performance. I have so much respect for Shopify for not going with the conventional wisdom of "Ruby is slow, ergo Ruby on Rails only scales to X and then after that you must migrate to a different platform". Instead they increased the performance of the entire language, which is great because it's a benefit we all get and they don't need to retool their entire stack to get it.
Well worth the read, even if you have nothing to do with Ruby. https://railsatscale.com/2025-01-10-yjit-3-4-even-faster-and-more-memory-efficient/
