This piece, written by a social & developmental psychologist (seems v relevant on this topic to have both!), links out to a LOT of good research around this topic and might be a helpful read for folks who want an intro commentary on this from a psych pov

I feel like my mind is just running wild watching so many of my loved ones' work being impacted right now. I'm just hitting refresh on every paper that I have that says "equity" in it (SO MANY) like they're gonna vanish even though I know this is irrational

This public service announcement brought to you by the fact that I realized I never posted our second code review anxiety paper to this collection and now it's there ->
"βMy code is shitβ: Negative automatic thoughts and outcomes of a behavioral experiment for code review anxiety" π

Things that I find mind-blowing include that despite being a queer woman who came out while doing a developmental psych PhD it didn't really hit me until reading this paper what a total gap in the empirical literature this was

This is mind-blowing and shows as ever that to understand our complex world intersectionality is a necessity

Right now as we grapple with a tsunami of changes to Ashley's work I'm grateful for every man in tech (you know who you are) who has ever taken a phone call or a zoom call to give me advice, share your strategies, and otherwise extend your information and access and privilege to our household.
Despite everything we face in tech the kindness and solidarity and community I have experienced light part of my way and help me understand what we can be to each other

Pretty wild to read the text of one of these executive orders and realize my wife and so many of my friends will be on one of these lists
"federal grantees who received federal funding to provide or advance DEI..."

Our good friend Claire Meaders, also UCSD faculty, created a science curricula that integrates art and science for sixth graders and made lovely "playing cards" of women in science that measurably decreased children's stereotypes about who can do science. It was hosted on a gov site that's now been taken down.

The fact that this reflection is itself gonna be rage bait kind of proves the point but I think it's worth sharing on behalf of people who want to interact with more people like me and who ostensibly care about community choices. We had a nuanced conversation & I encouraged my friend to iterate and experiment but I do think I have important expertise in what it feels like to strike out into a new area and face a lot of stereotype threat. I don't believe in sacrificial lamb models.

A really phenomenal scientist I know who does incredible outreach re: diversity in science asked me if I'd recommend mastodon and if it felt safe or if they'd get a lot of hurtful trolling and what the ratio of cost to benefit felt like to me. And I truly didn't know what my answer to that question was until this moment.
I don't like to give advice on how scientists use platforms because I think every audience is different. But my answer to my friend was no, it's not there yet for scientists.

Something I do not enjoy and frequently feel surprised by is how territorial people in software can be about different software topics and how fiercely these things are argued as social norms. Oh, so-and-so wrote a blogpost about this? Ok?? I'm supposed to be intimidated by that and always bow to and cite somebody's extremely contemptuous-toned blogpost? Get outta here
I'll do my best to engage with and respectfully listen to grey literature but not in this Control The Narrative way
