Why would anyone design any democratic system with a “dictator” clause (aka executive orders) which allows a single person to override the entire decision-making system any time they want?

You’d have to assume that country always expected a dictator at some point …

It's always worth remembering that people with a lot of power likely have a very good idea of particular future events, but they don't talk about those plainly in public because they don't want to spook the cattle

Gotta laugh/cry at all these US commentators running around like Chicken Little about Deepseek - "The Chinese, the Chinese!" ... if you've been looking at AI and computer science papers in the past decades you'd know that people with chinese names have been a tremendous force in the field all along!

"We thought of life by analogy with a journey, a pilgrimage, which had a serious purpose at the end, and the thing was to get to that end, success or whatever it is, maybe heaven after you’re dead. But we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing or to dance while the music was being played.” - Alan Watts

Absolutely. If education is about training brains to get stronger (and I think it is) then it makes no sense to use AI to do any of the exercises we know brains NEED to actually do. Education is not just about completing processes, anymore than you can get a friend to go to the gym for you.

By all means let’s use AI to remove boring admin work and free up more time for learning and collaboration. #openedtech #AI https://mastodon.social/@DrPen/113796971143042318

@Gargron

I love #Mastodon but I'd really like to see more effort go into making it really easy to maintain a server.

A Mastodon upgrade would ideally be as easy as upgrading any other consumer software.

I think that's the major thing holding it back, tbh.

I've enjoyed the #Mandelbrot zooms from Maths Town for years, but just noticed that they recently went for a world record zoom that went down to 1e21831.

Here's the last bit (spoiler, it ends on a mini-mandelbrot). The full sequence is over 24 hours!

Our universe is amazing.

A lot of people, especially over their 40s, need glasses to read.

It frustrates me that so many shampoo bottles have print that is so ridiculously small that many people have no hope of reading the labels in the shower (even to distinguish shampoo from conditioner, let alone the details)

If you're an OG Moodler, you'll remember I used to include photos of my kids in every release. It became a fun thing we'd make together twice a year to represent each release. Back in Moodle 1.2, over 20 years ago, I included this picture of Tui, my 3yo daughter, wearing my own Uni graduation cap (the source of the one in the Moodle logo).

This week, Tui graduated from University, a Bachelor of Philosophy degree with first class honours specialising in Electronic Music and Sound Design.

You can see more about her on https://tui-music.com. What you can't see there is what a smart, trustworthy, justice-oriented and creative woman she is, who would be a strong asset to any creative project requiring electronic music.

Congrats Tui and all the best for your future! #prouddad

I feel like a lot of our wider social issues are caused by the influence of #socialmedia algorithms. This paper shows how quickly it can work.

“Perhaps unsurprisingly, they found that reduced exposure to politically polarised content made people warmer to those they disagreed with politically, while greater exposure fostered harsher sentiments. What was unexpected is how quickly this occurred, with survey answers changing after just one day. “We were not confident this would work,” says Piccardi. “The result is surprising, and we’re excited by that.” “

Good work in this, folks. From my first read it seems very much in agreement with my own research and thinking about AI in education.

A lot of it boils down to being intentional and rigorous about when we should not use AI.

We hadn’t had a MoodleMoot in Australia since 2019 (because pandemic and other reasons) so I’m really happy Catalyst stepped up to start them up again! I’m here in Melbourne joining old and new friends at #mootau24

I mostly managed to block the USA election noise from all my feeds all year, but still, plenty leaked through. Annoyingly, big platforms like Youtube and Twitter just keep ignoring my preferences.

Hope it all dies down after Tuesday!
