Every time I see some politician or businessman wanging on about how we don't work hard enough/need to be in the office five days a week, it makes me feel like being an absolute slacker just because.

NB: I do my job. And if I didn't do my job, from home or the office, it'd be bloody obvious because my magazines wouldn't get made. But nothing wrecks my work ethic like yet another wealthy bellend telling me it's not enough.

So here it is... possibly the next project as I'm a slow sewist and need it by April, though I'm tempted to make a shirt first. (No, make the dress! Or REGRET IT.)

My sewing machine was serviced this week, the builders have nearly finished on the house, so it's time to get cracking.

I want to make more day clothes too, as I'd really like to join in Me-made May for the whole month this year. #sewing #steampunk

All my fabric and the pattern have arrived for my steampunk dress, so I suppose I’ll have to make it once the machine is back from being serviced. I’m not sure the patterned stuff has enough body to carry out the design, mind - if that turns out to be the case, I’ll just have to order a load more fake dupion.

Acquantaince was grizzling about all social media mining data and monetising users. I pointed out Mastodon. His response? Not enough users (go for quality, not quantity, is my choice) and 'servers can monetise things on an individual level'. Yes, and then users can just... migrate?

Can't understand people who grizzle that their babyfood is made with shit they didn't want, but object to a nice shit-free burger on the grounds that they'd have to choose their own toppings and chew the damn thing.

[#]WIPWednesday Still on the scrapball cardi. I didn’t complete it for #FinishOrFrogAlong BUT it is still in progress, and that’s something.

I am not planning on wearing a corset to the steampunk thing, not even under my dress. So I think I have shocked a pal who's into historical reenactment. But it's not like steampunk is actual history, and it's a costume so it's allowed to look costumey.

My basic aim is 'not look so out of place I spoil it for everyone else' without ending up with a pile of elaborate clothing I only wear once.

I make Pinterest boards a lot - each year I've been doing one of clothes that inspire me, as I navigate ageing/weight gain/style shifts. I also maintain ones for #craft and #sewing inspiration.

Anyway, this week I realised that a lot of the #embroidery I'd been admiring was by one person, Yumiko Higuchi. I think it's the combination of apparent simplicity with absolutely precise placing and stitching that appeals to me.

Anyway, here's her website:

We also have little tiny china dishes for the cats, so they can have little a goose, as a treat, when we have our Christmas dinner.

They will, of course, wolf theirs down, then spend the entire meal trying to scrounge more. It is a festive tradition.

Actually, it's an all year round tradition for those two...

I haven't been feeling particularly festive this year, possibly due to a combo of ilness and then building work dragging on at home (we have a functional kitchen for Christmas, hurrah!). And I'm working up to the 24th.

But those jingles are starting to sneak in. My husband and I usually spend it by ourselves with the cats, with our fave films and good food. And that's always something to look forward to.

The cats have already had their presents, as they found the bag with new catnip toys in.

Just blocked someone pretending to be Elon Musk. Just... why?! Of all the people in the world to want to pass yourself off as. (I'd have blocked the real one too.)

ANYWAY I think I've solved my dilemma of what to wear to the steampunk thingy, because I have actual train driver's overalls that will be fine for the day, and I'll try to sew something for the evening. It doesn't have to look good, merely appropriate, and not get in the way of FUN.

Getting sleazed at on LinkedIn by someone I worked with 20 years ago. I am 50, and honestly thought I was now finally old enough not to have to put up with this nonsense! (Not to mention I've been with the same partner since I was 20.)

PSA: LinkedIn is not a dating site.

Friends in #Wales , #Welsh friends, friends in #academia , we're trying to persuade the Senedd - Welsh government - to debate the horrific decline of the Lampeter campus. Please sign this Senedd petition as if we can hit 10,000 signatures it will at least be debated by the Welsh government.

I missed this one coming out - Black Angel have a new(ish) album, released early in October.

The guitar sound reminds me a lot of The Cult at times. So leaning more towards the #rock end of #goth but I am very much enjoying it. There are one or two songs that fall flat for me, but on the whole, good stuff. #GothMusic #Gothic

I'm replaying Dragon Quest Builders 2 at the mo, and had completely forgotten about the Goodybag - a monster that's basically a sack of loot, with necklaces and treasure poking out of the top - called Jules who speaks #polari . I don't know who does the localisation for the games, but it's brilliant. Bona, even.

The oldest degree-awarding institution in #Wales (which also introduced #rugby to the country) is under threat.

As a graduate of Lampeter I'm biassed, but I think it's a place worth saving. Small and quirky, when I was there we had one of the highest percentages of of students who were openly LGB because it was such a friendly place. A lot of working-class and mature students too.

There's a petition asking the Welsh govenment to save it. #academia #universities

Anyway, my mood today is a big fuck you to the way studying subjects for the love of them because employers will see your ability to think and learn has been replaced by the need to learn something for a specific job, and to the tuition fees that are killing social mobility, and to the way capitalism wrecks everything passionate and beautiful in the end.

Looks like what remains of my former university - which was the oldest in Wales (and introduced rugby to Wales) but got swallowed up by another establishment in a merger in 2010 - is going to close.

I haven't been back since I left in 1997, but it's still a sad end for a unique and magical place. It was tiny, rural, and in many ways incredibly eccentric, but that was what I loved about it. I suspect all the things that made it so special made it unsuited to modern commercial education.

I remember the last time the Tories got re-elected in the UK, the weird combination of sadness and fury I felt. But also the determination to stick it out, to keep fighting for the right things. And things aren't perfect now under our current government, but they're definitely better, with the chance of improving more.

So if you're in the US, stick it out. Support good people, and reach out to good people when you need support. Hope endures.

Made it to the gym today - five weeks running - and am now tidying up thread ends on the shirt I’ve made. It definitely feels as though the changes at work have been good for me. I feel much less stressed and much more able to do things in my spare time.

It's the full moon day of Thadingyut today, the Burmese festival of lights. I've been marking it since being in my grandfather's hometown Maymyo/Pyin Oo Lwin for Thadingyut 11 years ago.

The people of Burma/Myanmar are living under an unelected military junta, and have been for more than three years now. I realise there's a lot going on in the world, but please remember the people of that country too, and their struggles.
