This one here was hilariously overkill for the task. The device pictured is a 26.5 GHz spectrum analyzer that originally had a list price of about 75 k€, which was hooked up to a board that barely managed to scrape 2 GHz. It just happened to be available, and it definitely did the job.

People always go on about how microwave stuff is "black magic", but did anyone ever point out how the Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) spheres that are widely used as the core component of electrically tunable microwave components are literal crystal balls?
